Lets talk GEC!

Kiteman72 and Brian2go

Bladeplay on GEC' lockbacks have been a 'norm' that many have accepted and one that has deterred me from picking up one of their lockbacks till now. That being said, they seem to have addressed this issue from personal reports from the Rendezvous with their locking bars. I've asked several members how the up and down play was on their 83 and all of them said non-existent now. I think it's been fixed completely, only time will tell.

Like you, I have not purchased any of GECs lockbacks because I just can't stand blade play. I have my eye on a 42 made in 2014 but I'm still on the fence. Since, as you said, the play issue has seemed to be an accepted norm, I just decided to save myself the hassle of being dissatisfied. Plenty of slipjoint GECs to keep me happy.

Thinking out loud here but I would love to see GEC do a real gentleman's knife (maybe a lobster). Stainless blades, MOP handles, tip bolsters, and coined liners.

This is as close as they've come to what you're asking. IIRC, these were delayed a bit as Bill Howard worked on them himself. MOP on the #09 Esquire. 15 made.

A lobster would be cool though. I really do like the #09s and even the #33s in the Gentleman's knives role.

I have some questions about GEC, i dont know much about their company so all information is appreciated. How does their knife system work? I see all these patterns and I figure the list keeps growing. Do they make runs of each knife specifically like Its the first week of January, lets do a limited run of special Ben Hogans 65 with such and such materials. Then these go to dealers and customers either get it or dont. Im curious about this because a #48 big clip just showed up on ebay, not my favorite color but what the hell, why not. Are there models they dont make any more? Hows it all work? Do collectors browse the GEC site and pay attention to when they come out or just sign up somewhere that lets them know ooo such and such pattern is coming out next month, get those pennys and nickels together? Thanks guys and gals, been very helpful!

The pattern numbers aren't sequential. The first ones GEC made in 2006 were the #23 and #73 trappers. We have a #99 but haven't had a #01. They're just the number designations GEC gives to a particular pattern of a particular size.

There is no set schedule of what knives GEC makes. They make knives they want. A pattern like the #73 may have multiple runs in a year where as another like the #16, #06, #09, have only run once so far. Will they make more in the future? Who knows. They do have a schedule on their site so you can get an idea of what is coming up. Also, several dealers have their own, more precise schedules from GEC as they speak to GEC often.

Dealers buy the knives from GEC, and sell to us, the buyers. You have to watch GEC's website as well as dealers if you really want to be up on what is coming out and when. Usually though there is chatter on the forums in advance of a release. You can also follow their in progress pics and can sometimes see a pattern coming up that wasn't mentioned yet. I'm not sure that dealers notify customers of what's coming out beyond the production schedules and reserve systems they may offer. Varies by dealer of course (and best not discussed further on the forums. This forum is really about the knives, not where and how to buy.)

Ah I see, thanks. So basically if I dont win this #48 auction no big deal, eventually some more will come along the way from GEC is what you are saying?

Possibly... The big clip was used on the Scagel in 2012 (or earlier, don't totally remember), Northwoods Hawethorne in June of last year, and along with the Buckeye Trappers this year in March. So at least a 2 year difference between the Scagel and Northwoods big clips.

dang. 2 years?! thats a wide margin... any one know what the original prices for the #48 big clip non stag models? need to make sure i have decent bids in lol :D

If you are looking for a certain knife, certain pattern, you can also check Dealer Stock. But then again, this Forum is for discussing the knives, not where or how to buy them. Or pricing for that matter.

oops, sorry guys! thanks for the info

I'm a fan of red linen micarta. I notice it has showed up on a fairly limited number of patterns. Anyone know why some micartas are used more than others?

I just acquired a nice Wharncliffe # 72 lock back in cocobolo. I love the knife but it has significant blade play. Is there any way I can fix this or will GEC rectify the issue if I send it in? I really like this knife and want to make it useable!

I believe a Manufacturers Lifetime Warranty on Workmanship and Materials would cover that.

Awesome! Anyone have a good contact email? I have tried the ones on the GEC site and have not received a reply. Its been about three weeks now.

I usually do but last time the phone kept ringing busy every time I called. I just tried again and was put in contact with Chris (sp?). Very nice lady! I will be sending in my cocobolo #72 today! I am sure it will be a couple of months before I get her back but it is well worth the wait.
I haven't sent a knife in for a while, but it's definitely never been more than a month.
