Lets talk GEC!

Well I finally reached a consensus for my least desirable blade shape amongst all the different blades and patterns I have used,I have tried to use most patterns for a week or more to try and to get a feel for practicality in everyday use and I've concluded that the infamous 85 potbelly takes the show,I found on a few occasions that the blade just left me frustrated. One blade I have not tried is the real ramsfoot/lambsfoot on 93 but briefly used it on the 88 ,but I'm sure it wouldn't be a bottom feeder seeing as I like the wharncliffe so much.

I'd have to agree. I have had a few 85s pass through my hands but I could never warm up to the bulbous blade. It always felt a bit clumsy to me. I do like the teardrop frame though, it's very attractive.

In my opinion, the lambsfoot blade embodies all the strength of a sheepfoot, yet possesses much of the nimbleness of a wharncliffe. Top choice blade for me.

agreed, it doesnt go in the pocket too often, maybe if it had a clip. it was one of those models where I saw at a rendezvous and then became obsessed with it briefly. even had one deleted. but it rarely gets carried. solid pull tho, that year's run

I’m trying to track down a #62 Pocket Carver. Can someone tell me if the build quality is at the same level between the farm and field vs the Tidioute? I’m not particular on the scale materials but want to make sure the build quality is still on par.

Thanks

I have one of each. Build quality is the same. The Tidioute is prettier but the F&F is the same knife, without bolsters and with a synthetic material instead of bone for the covers.

I own four Farm & Field 62 pocket carvers. All are very well made without any flaw as are all the Farm & Field knives i own ( 99, 47, 35).
What characterizes these knives is that the pivots are cutlery rivets that I think are more resistant to torsional stress than are the usual pins in bolsters.
Not saying that pins in bolsters could be damaged but i can testify after four years of use as a compulsive whittler that the Farm & Field 62 is very reliable.

Yes, same quality build between the F&F and the Tidioute versions. I’ve owned two F&F and I currently own one of the Tidioute versions. The main difference you will find (other than bolsters and a shield on the tidioute version) is that the F&F do not have rounded edges around the body of the knife. I do think the etch on the main blade of the F&F versions is very nice.

Regardless of what version you go after, expect somewhat vague action on the small secondary blades. They’re very small blades on thinner springs so any gunk in the pivot can greatly affect the action. A thorough flushing makes this better, but it’s a common thing on all three pocket carvers that I’ve owned.

This F&F 71 has a steel frame as opposed to the brass frame on most GEC’sView attachment 2642088

GEC used to use the code "STL" to indicate steel liners on certain lines (for example, the 735211STL was a #73 Northfield scout trapper with steel liners & bolsters as opposed to brass liners). Not sure if this is still done, to be honest.

in the old days yes, they used to specify it, Christine would write that on the sticker. This hasn't been a practice for some time tho. quite frankly, i think a lot of the runs have had brass liners of late

I'm pretty excited about upcoming releases, but also quite excited to be visiting Titusville in about a month. I will take a factory tour and buy some stuff. I have looked around about accommodations in town and in the general area.

Does anyone have special advice or recommendations for lodging and food, or anything else?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

I am a fan of all steel builds! I really like the ones I have and wish they made more that way. I also like nickel silver in place of brass, as on the Black Jack.

Its a very small town, very 1980s feel. Make sure you stop at Missy's diner! Sadly, Titusville is not what we would refer to as a culinary hub. Accommodations in town? the train hotel, best western and the cross creek is a short drive away from the factory. The drake oil well is an attraction. You might have more options in Franklin. Titusville is very tiny, as in the entire town might be a total of 5-8 square blocks, you can practically walk it in 20-25 minutes. They should still have that brewery there and they did open a new dining establishment the last time I visited for rendezvous '22.
