Lets talk GEC!

There was that exact knife posted on the exchange this am.. it's spf now, but there is still a 2 blade I think. fyi

Yup, I was a bit late to that one. Still looking though thanks. Out of all the GEC models, I think the 15 frame knives are my absolute favorite, especially with the single long pull spear.
I really hope GEC finds it in their heart to come back to another run of the long pull spears.

I wanted to follow up to my earlier post in this thread about locating a GEC knife released on my son's birthday. Thanks to 2Dead, I was able to track down an OD Green Linen Micarta #73 that just arrived in the mail today. This is my first GEC and given all that's said here about the F&F, I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed. Blade is fairly badly off center and a pretty decent gap along the backspring. I tried to capture both in the below pictures. Is this normal, or is one that just slipped through QC?

I apologize if this is the inappropriate place for this thread.

Not usual, but it can happen. I mean, the knives are put together by hand and there might be some QC issues on your knife. Does it rub against the liner? Does it provide some bad bladeplay?

Is it going to be a user or a look-at-knife?

I wouldn't call that necessarily 'normal', but of the 100 or so GEC's I own, there are a couple that have off center blades, one of which does rub the liner a little, on a #36. The back spring gaps tend to vary a little. I find that the completely gap free, water tight springs run about 25-30% of the ones I own. These things don't bother me too much though. They don't affect the action of the knife, so I never did anything about it and I'm happy with them.

Obviously, you're not happy with yours, so you have two options. Return it to the dealer for a refund, or call/email Chris at GEC and ask if they are issues they will fix. Warranty repairs are awesome..... sometimes you'll get your knife back in a week, but I did have one take 2 months once.

Very abnormal. I wouldn't be happy with that one and would send it back.

I have a few #73's and none have off center blade or a spring-liner gap anything like yours which i agree is a big gap.
Is this a 2015 knife ?
I would return it to the dealer (if that's who you bought it from) and say "I don't want it", "Please pick me out another one and inspect it closely before sending it".
If he does not have a replacement i would ask for a refund and then start all over again but with a different dealer. That knife should not have been shipped out from the factory or from the dealer.
I'm sorry you had this happen with your very first GEC. A 'bad' knife from GEC is now somewhat rare. It was higher when they first started up 2006 and 2007. That's why i asked if this is a 2015 knife.
Don't give up. I have a great many GEC made knives and i get a great deal of pleasure from owning them and on occasion using one.
A good place to buy GEC's are in the Traditional For Sale forum here. Lots of never used GEC. Be sure to ask the seller lots of questions. Most people here will give you full disclosure answers.

Thanks for all the feedback! I'll be contacting the dealer about sending it back. I'm not dissuaded from GEC yet by any means-I'm awaiting a #77 1b in blackwood that I am beyond excited for-plus I've seen so many amazing knives on the forum that they've produced. This is a 2015 knife, to answer the question. Since it's released the same day as my sons birthday, I know the knife will eventually build up some sentimentality due to that connection and I'd like to make sure I got a good example, since I'd like to pass it along to him some day.

.........

The tangs are annealed so the off center blade should be an easy fix if you decide to send it in. They'll just knock it back the other way.

One of the things I love most about this company is that I find myself constantly surprised.
I've had this little 25 for quite a while. It's my go to when I've carpentry fixits to do (very useful in the pocket and compliments the chisels well) and was trimming a hinge housing on a door frame when I noticed the tangstamp. I then checked my collection - not a big collection mind, a couple dozen 25s and about the same with various mixed patterns but can find no other match.

Does anyone else have anything other than this run of 25s with the same tangstamp?

Paul

I have the same tang stamp on my 250109.

I have a Northfield #12 Toothpick in my pocket today that has that same tang stamp. Titusville Iron Works above the model #, 128109.

A discussion of dealer protocol belongs in Good Bad and Ugly.

I have a GEC congress on the way, and have just noticed some variation in the sheepsfoot blades - some seem more wharncliff than others. Does anyone have any comparison pics of the different mainblades on the various congress models?

Outside of SFOs, is there anyway to influence a GEC pattern production? Do they have someone here like polling for ideas for next production?

I would think dealers have the greatest influence on production, since they actually purchase the most knives from Great Eastern.

I'd say post your ideas here in this thread, there is some evidence that it gets noticed. SFOs are still your best opportunity, so maybe contact some of the dealers who have done them in the past and run your ideas by them.
