Lets talk GEC!

If i come across my 100 yr old German folder with the secondary as lock release i will post pics here. I have too many unsorted knives to go through, would take me many hours, but i will keep a look out for it. When my collection got to over about 5,000 knives i could no longer keep them organized, which is a problem. Part of the fun of collecting is being able to find a specific knife when you want to, like now. What's the point of having a knife if i can't find it ?

kj, I feel for you. At first glance a guy thinks, "5000 knives! Wow!" but as a fellow collector, I know what you mean.

My Big collection is comic books. I have many thousands, more than I could ever reread in my lifetime and I'm relatively young. :) I've been trying to get them organized but it seems like I can never get caught up. And I'm still buying more.

I took a hiatus from pocket knives for quite a while but then discovered GEC. Now that's outta control, lol.

But my hobbies are fun and usually keep me out of trouble. Hope you find that knife, kj!

Thanks Kiteman. I do appreciate the empathy.
"thinks, 5,000 knives. Wow !" that's when i lost control. Think double that now. It's serious.

With GECs I am always telling myself that they will hold their value. That's the rationale I use to justify buying more. I will likely die owning most of them I'm sure.

GECs production numbers are all so crazy low that I think a lot of these knives will be very difficult to locate in the future.

Some of them already are very difficult to locate. There's been several specific knives I've looked for over the past few years that are near impossible to find. The ones I have seen sell for more than I'm usually willing to pay. For the most part, I firmly believe that these knives will hold their value. Give em another decade and I'm sure they'll be worth even more.

I totally agree. GECs production numbers can be very frustrating if one is a "completest" type of collector, as it will be next to impossible for most folks to ever have "all" of any particular pattern. But that can enhance the hunt for some as well I suppose.

Steve, I've been drooling over your photos since joining the forum, you have a great collection! :)

I Just saw today that GEC will be making an easy open Jack on a #77 frame for Derrick. That should be interesting...

one of my tube caps say 15321SCL? Thats not on the list of abbreviations... any clues? screwdriver cap lifter? its a beer scout

My best guess is that your cap says 153215CL. On my soda scout tubes the 5 kinda looks a little like an S.

You know those web sites that aggregate all the available deals on car rentals, airfare, hotels, etc.? Wouldn't it be awesome if someone built a site that listed all the available knives for sale from GEC dealers?!?!? A one-stop shop to buy GEC knives from any/all of their online retailers.

Let's talk about the knives please. Not where to buy them, who has them and how much they cost. Thanks.

Kiteman is correct on the pattern number.
15 = GEC's #15 pattern
3 = Sheepsfoot
2 = Two blades
15 = 2015 Production year
CL = Cap Lifter

haha! yes thats it! thanks guys and gals! i thought that S was supposed to be a five. my other question is how come some of the production has STL whats that refer to, if these are are all carbon blades. steel bolsters?

Yes, blades in knives are typically made out of steel. So are the backsprings. Sorry, didn't think I needed to mention that.

I picked up my bark ivory # 54 Northfield yesterday. Rain today so i cannot take pictures but Rockon75 did post KSF's picture of this knife in post 3349 pg 168 of this thread.
Usually one can see some of the grain without magnification. This ivory which is referred to as "bark" because it comes from the surface of the tusk shows no grain what-so-ever even with a 9x loupe. I have 6 or 7 ivory handled GEC knives and all show plenty of interesting grain. If the dark scarring streaks were not present i would have guessed these handles to be a man made plastic like substance, but not Micarta because it has a type of grain or lines in it.
It is a very nice knife but i am a little disappointed in the ivory which made this a $350 knife.
Maybe others who have one of these 'final run' ivory folders could use a loupe to examine the ivory and report findings here. I would like to know if this 'no grain' ivory is on others from this run as well.
