Lets talk GEC!

GEC makes a great knife but I am a little burnt out on them. They Nice knives with some of the best fit/finish out there and I had high hopes for them. Early on you could usually go to their distributers and be able to pick your knife out of their available stock and at reasonable prices. Now they make a release and their gone almost before you can blink with the latest knives showing up on the secondary market at inflated prices almost immediately. I guess this is a tribute to their popularity but it has pushed knife lovers like me out of the GEC market. At this point in my life I decline to play the subscription game, partake in a lottery or sign up for reserves. I love and use my two esquires and my Pemberton and I have three 15 Huckleberry's put away for my Grandsons; I sold my others and now it's pretty much a look at what's new but not buying.

I can understand. I, too, am a huge GEC fan (I even collect the "buttons") but have "lottery fatigue" and am becoming more intolerant of the price gouging on the secondary market. In this day, most folks have to be at least more thoughtful about unnecessary spending or hobby acquisitions. I guess now that I have my 6-7 all time favorites, that's enough for me. I still buy knives regularly, and Im blessed not to have to sell any, but not paying overly inflated prices just to have something. I'd rather buy a 60-100 year old knife in decent shape for $40 than a modern take on it for $200-300+.

I don't mind the scarcity and actually enjoy the hunt most of the time. My problem lately is how likely you are to get cover materials that deviate pretty far from the most desirable ones. Unmatched pieces that could have been scrap, bone that didn't take the dye or the jigging had to be ground down in an awkward way near the bolsters. When you get your prize in the mail, it's another lotto. I liked how the 93s categorized the non-snakey snakewood for a cheaper price at least.

I once had a green jigged 56. Maybe thatll be an opportunity for another bird dog pattern coming up

Certainly hear you on this  I'm in a good spot about it as I'm lucky to have had access to their knives in the past and I enjoy those I have, either as users or to adore :) The current scramble and angst doesn't interest me at all -get enough stress in life as it is ;). The only GECs I'd be interested in in the future would be all steel models, the finish on these is exceptionally satisfying.

Thanks, Will

Wise words Will. I do like the GEC knives and own 15 of them. They all are users and fit my needs. So i can't decently complain. Since 2020 i've failed to get any knife but this one:DSC_0440.JPG

The only one i regret is the 13 Congress single blade. C'est la vie.

Dan.

That's a great one to have gotten. I don't carry mine enough. It is both classy and tough.

amen, these days i mostly have out gecs that dont really have tubes. everything else packed away neatly. they also ran most of the patterns i generally chase this year already so, time to sit back and enjoy what I have. Especially with most dealers charging quite high prices.
