Lets talk GEC!

Compared to GEC's 1095 how does their stainless take and hold an edge? In my experience The 1095 takes an edge very well but would like for it to hold it a little better. The stainless would be very welcome this time of year in hot and muggy Tennessee so I can put it in my pocket and not worry about it.
What has your experience been?

Thanks,
Rick

What rma100 is saying is that these knives have not yet been made, hence not available to the public yet, and only one dealer reserves the knife, so all of the other dealers have yet to make them available. This would mean that anyone has a chance at getting one. Just keep checking the dealers when the knives are beginning to come out. He also said, because these are a short run (there won't be many made), so not everyone that wants one will be able to get one. I'm sure he's right about that..........of course there's always availability from the folks who buy them five at a time, then sell them for double the price on the forum or the bay.

Tell me how do you think a person even has a shot at buying 5 of them. Its hard enough to get 1.

Rick,
I love the 440c GEC uses. It seems to me to hold an edge a bit longer than 1095, if all thing are equal. Not very scientific, but just a feeling.

Okay, maybe I quoted the wrong post. Here is the better one for my response. The previous poster was asking if he missed a run of 15's and JC57 went through the whole list of options, as if he did miss them. And as I said, these have not yet been released.
My apologies. I was just clarifying which 15's were being discussed. I did a cut-and-paste of the pattern description from the GEC web site.

I am interested in the Elk and Burnt Orange jigged bone. I would have preferred end-caps but I didn't want to miss the chance at one of these in SS.

This information is disingenuous and is flat out wrong...

Following Gary's advice, question retracted.

I was wondering, GEC started in 2006 but didn't release any actual knives to the public until 2007 (unless I'm mistaken). Are they celebrating ten years at this years rendezvous or will they next summer? Does anyone with an ear to the ground know if they're planning anything extra special for the decade? Just a thought...

This thread needs to get off the discussion of dealers and back to the discussion of the knives.

Frank and I have been pretty lenient in letting this drift into the occasional dealer update etc. If you want to discuss dealer practices, GEC practices and other commercial stuff do it in Feedback.

I tend to agree with this, but for a different reason. It's not the dealers fault that GEC decided to spring an unannounced short run of knives, or that they are allocated they way they are to dealers. Rma100 has done a great favour to people on this forum by taking his time to try and explain the situation a little better, and doesn't deserve to bear the brunt of the criticism because he's chosen to do that to try and help us.

I think the real issue here is that GEC, knowing full well how incredibly popular a single clip blade SS steel boys knife would be, has decided to release a knife like this in this fashion. They expect their customers to spend hours trawling the web and forums to try and locate one of these knives, when they could have announced a large run of these months out and everyone who was desperate to get one would have had a chance to get a reservation in.

Now I realise that GEC has survived and thrived through a business model that no-one else has had the courage to try, let alone persevere with, but they also are treading a fine line between making their knives sought after, or annoying their loyal customers. I think they do need to be careful about that, and hopefully they will produce enough of their highly sought after patterns later in the year to keep people happy

Take the dealer discussions to Feedback. I won't say it again. I'll close this thread if I have to.

Mark,
Thanks for the response. If everything goes well I'll be able to make a comparison for myself soon.
Take care,
Rick

Just got the SS Navy today. The burnt orange looks amazing. I know some people weren't sure about the color but I really like mine. Kinda cool that it's the "SS 15 Navy" the SS suits the knife name very well. Anyways here she is...

That sure is a looker! Thanks for posting the pictures! Burnt Orange is by far my favorite color of bone that GEC makes. I don't mind that it's really dark. It will lighten if you carry it. I have one on the way as well. I like that GEC tends to use this distinctive jigging pattern only on the GEC branded knives. I'm probably wrong on this, but isn't the chestnut also restricted primarily to the GEC brand as well?

That "Burnt Orange" is a little darker than I was expecting but it worked out to be a beautiful handle material. I've got one of the clip-blade 15s ordered in that handle.

Yes I think so, chestnut and grooved bone are both SS handle materials. Correct me if I am wrong, but I haven't seen the corrugations inside the long grooves before. Is this the first time they've been there?

Also, I really like the polished bolsters on this knife. The new SS 15 on the GEC cover photos seems to have satin bolsters. I don't think they look as nice.

I stared at that for a while and thought the same thing, but it could just be picture quality and lighting. Some of the ones in construction looked like maybe they were polished. Guess we won't know until there are more finished pics, or until they start shipping them.

The micarta one I received yesterday has a brushed finish on the bolsters, shield, and bail (which I knew going in). Combined with the "smooth but not polished" surface of the micarta covers, the whole knife has a look and feel I've never experienced before.

Yeah, did that brushed finish first appear on the SFO 85? I'm not sure. I don't mind it on the micarta but don't like it so much on the wood

I don't know if Bill worked at Queen back in '76, he may have been lurking around cleaning up and such, but it looks as if he's produced a damn fine repro of the old 'Winterbottom' bone that they used back then.

Not exactly the same, but very close in color and overall appearance, this bone Navy Knife is really a stunner! Love the pinchability and 440C as well; I'm keepin' this one!
