Lets talk GEC!

They look good. Hopefully GEC will run more of these knives. It seems like there is a large demand for them.

Thanks, Mike :)

I think the clip blade did it for a lot of folks. I know I had an elk and I secured an old barn wood today. Now if they would only release more beer scout/radio knives with clips [emoji16]

The clip on the 15 is an excellent design, couple it with stainless and it's a winner.

I wonder if this was retracted, delayed or possibly a typo. Originally when the first schedule update was posted there were #15 Navy knives in SS that we're going to be produced with a single clip blade.

Thanks for the comments on how 440c would age. I've really liked how 1095 ages and gets character. Bright steel seems like less to me. I'm probably crazy. Single clip 15s are hard to come by at a fair price. When I call GEC they've stated they have no plans to make any through this year. That was since last summer. Now these pop up! I think I need to just try one.

I just ordered a stainless single clip 15 in tortoise shell. Excited to see how it handles daily use. It should be here in a few days.

I'm surprised the tortoise acrylic is still available, it's an attractive cover material and very durable.

So was I. I did a quick Google search around midnight last night and found one in stock, pulled the trigger, and it shipped out this morning. Must of been one of the last ones because the distributor shows out of stock now. Luck of the draw I guess.

I was disappointed to hear these were a short run and thought I'd never find that tortoise I was hoping for. I checked my favorite dealer's site today though around 1pm and lo, there it was still in stock! I snatched it up and as usual within the hour I got my tracking number. This is the knife I've been asking for GEC to make, so I'm thrilled to get one. (I still feel it's short a coping or combo-tool secondary but beggars =/= choosers) ;)

Just got one of these too, curiosity got the better of me. Anyone know why GEC produces so much tortoiseshell? It seems to dominate all other acrylics. Is it because it is seen as a traditional colour or pattern? I did a quick Google and saw some beautiful green and blue acrylics and wonder why they aren't still being used.

Faux Tortoise is used a lot, I think the main reason being that it suits just about any pattern, other acrylics whilst very attractive (Church Stained Glass, Dead Skunk, et al.) are often very pattern sensitive and look rubbish on some knives. Just a theory mind..plus real Tortoise (thankfully not used now) was an expensive and lavish option on Traditional knives. GEC's faux version is really impressive too.

Those stainless Boys fled the coop alright,:eek:us non American stood no chance in securing one  Regret that as I would've been happy with any except the wood one. I know one thing, I won't be buying aftermarket at inflated price, despite liking the knife very much.

Look forward to pictures of them in their new homes:thumbup:

Regards, Will

It was an extremely popular material. Knife catalogs from the early part of the 20th century illustrate dozens of patterns with tortoise shell. Mostly pen and lobster patterns though.

It seems to be one of the few acrylics that GEC uses across the Northfield, Tidioute and GEC lines. It's a great looking material; if I remember correctly, my 2nd GEC was a 54 Big Jack in tortoise shell.

Will,
If you let me know ahead of time next time, instead of after its too late, I will be happy to reserve, purchase, repackage and ship overseas to you any knife you like. At whatever it costs me...thus avoiding the inflated aftermarket prices and the non American disadvantage. I would offer you one of mine, but it would have to be the 'wood' option that you clearly don't care for. (I think the wood is second only to the Elk.)
My offer to purchase for you stands, anytime you are ready in the future.
Mark
Personally, I am not into acrylics and like the natural materials much better. I think GECS version of Tortoise shell is pretty good though.

I agree with you Will I don't think particular acrylics fit every pattern. Speaking for myself, I wasn't sure that turtle would fit the boys knife. I was pleasantly surprised how well it does IMO, and picked one up. I now have one of every flavor on the way. BTW, I'm sending you a PM..

Although GEC has used Tortoise Shell acrylic previously, it wasn't until last year that it started showing up a lot. It was originally a slightly different acrylic (I recall a GEC branded Conductor). Last year, it barely made its way onto the 54 Moose and Big Jack. Next it was used on a very short run of 48's, then the 83 and finally the Beer Scout. There was also a 71 SFO with it made last year. Although I did buy one of the stainless 15's with it, I feel it's getting to the point of being overused. I like variety!

As far as GEC acrylics go, I really like the Perylic, particularly the Orange Crush on the 54 here. I don't recall seeing it on any other knife. The acrylic used on the 64 swing guards was also outstanding!
