Lets talk GEC!

I know someone asked last week, but is the bone linen micarta a go I guess? That's what I reserved.

Just got my 72 in Grizzly Cut Bone! Loved everything about my 42 except the size, so when I saw these drop it was a no brainer. Everything I was hoping for, and F&F is typical GEC excellence.

I had to pick one of those up also, just loved that jigging too much. Mine came screamin sharp, like most of my recent GECs.

I'd like to echo LastRodeo's comment and point out how much GEC has improved their factory edges. I've picked three GECs on the last month one from 2014 and two from 2016. Everyone knows what the old edges were like, especially near the tips. These new knives though are really incredible. Even the huge spear on my new 45 is perfectly sharpened right up to the tip! Another area of improvement is their lockbacks. I got play with a few 72's and man those things are dialed right in. Not too tight, no play. If I didn't have 440C 42 I'd be all those blackwood 72's. I gotta say these knives just keep getting better.

I finally managed to procure a Eureka Jack! This is my first parts knife and the quality is easily in the top 10% of my collection (flush springs, centered blades, tight construction). What an excellent blade to carry! I did modify the coping blade into a lambsfoot to access the Main blade's pull. I went slow and carried a couple different blade shapes and really like where it ended up.

Like several others here I am waiting on the #77 Northfield Barlow I reserved in copperhead saw cut bone. My skin is peeling off with the waiting as this is pretty much a Grail knife for me with the style, size, match striker long pull, single clip point blade, etc.

Yeah, should be a looker. I like match striker long pulls, and really want a saw cut bone knife. Missed out on early reserve though. :grumpy:

I haven't kept up on all the 72's but I'm assuming that they've all been built since the 77's are now in production. So what's coming after the 77's? I heard Beer Scouts. Anybody know what's after the Beer Scouts?

According to the forum knife thread our forum knives are coming after the 77s. This is usually accompanied by regular production knives on the same frame. I'd guess the Beer Scouts are coming after those.

I'm new to traditionals and only have a few.

I just received a GEC Tidioute 73 today and it's impossible to open without a pry tool. My north field viper is tight but the 73 is on another level.

What should I do?

Edit:English.

I sent the knife back to GEC less than a month ago to see if they could loosen it up. It came back today and I think they may have just sent me a new knife which was not expected. I really like this knife but I just got a #15 razor Jack 2 blade in rust red bone which I absolutely love so t may be awhile before the #73 sees any pocket time.

Thanks for the info on my original question.

My 73 is the only rough opening GEC I have also. Wish it were s long pull instead of a nail nick. Its rough on the nails

I've been toying with the idea of a razor jack. Do you find the blade shape has a functional advantage for opening? Or does it just look cool?

Hey GEC if you're reading this, how's about a jack knife in the CASE 6217 "Loom Fixer" pattern with dark red, deep worm grooved bone covers?

It was worth a try...

The recently released GEC 72s look great. Am trying to decide between the Tidioute Grizzly Bear cut bone or Indian Rosewood OR the Northfield African Blackwood. Any difference in terms of durability/feel in the hand or collectability?

Thanks.

Welcome Ctarant. Collectability is a subjective idea of taste, but I would guess the Northfield line would more so just due to the extra finishing details. As far as durability, all should perform equally in my opinion. African blackwood is an extremely hard wood that should hold up to an accidental drop better than Jigged bone. Not sure how it compares to the Rosewood in toughness, but Im guessing it would be close.

The Rosewood will age and turn black (possibly with sutle red hues) if used and carried, especially in direct sunlight.

The major difference will be the finishing details such as nail nick vs long pull. I have found that long pulls usually have a stiffer pull but on a lockback, especially the 72, the pull will not be near as stiff and should be just a easy to open as on a nail nick. All the 72 I have had have had the softest pull of the GEC patterns.

In short buy the one you like if your going to use it. Hope this helped

Edit: As far as feel the depth of the jigging in the grizzy 72 is certianly going to feel different than the wood variants. The groves in the grizzy are some of the deepest GEC produces if not the most.
