Lets talk GEC!

Curiously, I dont think this is worth a new thread, but does any one know which gec models share the same blades? from what it looks like, i think the 15 clip is the same clip in the pony jack, im sure there are other repeats. can any one confirm? TIA

I don't have a ton of good info for you on that, Jack. However, during discussions with Evan about modifying a knife he mentioned that he had tried to swap blades on similar patterns, for example taking a clip from a 66 and throwing it on a 15. He said that his attempts to do so didn't work out too well and that he had to do a lot of work to make them function properly. That makes me think that they don't use the exact same blade for different patterns, just similar ones. I could be wrong on that, though.

Looks may be deceiving i suppose, id figure something like the 63,64,65 can all be changed about if necessary. not that any one would deliberate chop open a perfectly fine GEC to swap blades around. Well except me, having the procedure done some time soon to remove pesky pen blades to make one bladers. The reason I did ask is, I saw a picture of someones TC 15 clip with the tip snapped off, and I wonder, where or how such a repair can be done, since clip 15s themselves are often a rarity and cant be harvested from so easily.

I believe that some frames, like the 63,64,65 or the 72,73 are the same frame just one pattern has lockback and the other doesn't or some other small detail. I'm pretty sure I read that there are two identical frames that have different pattern numbers because one has halfstops and the other doesn't. I'd think that these knives would share common blades, as it would only make sense.

The 15 was the exact pattern I was talking about with Evan and from what he told me we wouldn't be able to use a blade from another pattern, it had to come from another 15 because there were slight differences. This is when I was having him make me a TC barlow with a caplifter:

There's surely some overlap but I haven't thought about it. It's something that usually draws attention only when there's a poor match.

If the difference is a half stop, the tangs would need to be different. I don't have any insider information but my GUESS is that they use different dies. I would think separate dies would be much easier than reshaping each of the tangs.

That's interesting. I wouldn't have guessed it. I wonder what are the differences. Edit: Oh the capliter is probably thicker than a pen blade. I wonder if there's much variation between the same blades on different runs though.

When you have Half/Stops , the end that rubs the spring is flat . No Half/Stops and that end is rounded .

The clip blade on the pony jack is different than the boys knife.

You might be referring to my avatar . It's a antique amber clip that I gifted to a friend way back when . It snapped doing a stab cut into a shotgun shell that got stuck in chamber . Something like that , I didn't quite understand what he wa doing. . I contacted glenbad about this and he said that I could put a spear 15 blade on if I wanted . He didnt say anything about other frames . I Also contacted Chris and she told me to sent it in . I decided to go with GEC because I really didnt want to sacrifice another knife .

yes indeed! your knife had popped up slipjoint paradigm and everyone was horrified. i had wondered if GEC would fix that. im very glad they did!

The tanto point has me cracking up, cbr.

Unfortunately I cant take credit for the tanto. This was a forum collaboration from another thread... I added the auto button and compass. Feel free to edit the picture and add on anything it's missing!

Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to depict a screw-off butt cap to reveal a storage compartment inside. Oh well.

Interestingly, the 3⅞" #48 trapper, the 4" #12 toothpick, and the 4⅛" #53 Cuban stockman all used the same muskrat clip main.

Is it the barlow auto rescue scout with compass and glass breaker?

I can't express how much I love the tactical textured bone for extra grip, but the blade is seriously lacking in the jimping department.

You mean Sgt Schultz -he was always dodgy and would have been Feldwebel Schultz not Sergeant- I've always felt that those little details let down the historical accuracy of the show.:D

I heard that the upcoming GEC auto rescue scout has a barometer in the handle too-for when you need to know what the weathers going to do when you are camped out under the freeway overpass with nothing but a few pieces of greased knife tube paper for warmth and a mattress made of empty knife tubes to your name.
well I stand corrected thank you meako. :D
