Lets talk GEC!

Could you guys show some pictures of the improved edges you've put on your knives?

This one's not a GEC, but it illustrates the type of edge I eventually put on my users (slipjoints).

GEC is putting out more smaller knives now, and we all know they like to do their own thing, altering patterns just a little to be unique.

Bill, if you're reading this, how about a peanut pattern at 3¼" to 3⅜" closed. You might even consider your first shadow pattern in micarta or G10.
Anyone else interested in such a hybrid?

Not a p.nut for me thanks but I would like to see:

a) Tip bolsters
b) Shadow pattern
c) Sunk joints
d) Micartas, some acrylics mimicking Cell colours
e) More Rat-Tails
f) A Norfolk which has a decent long and broad Wharncliffe, the Northwoods version is too tiny for my taste. Oh and a Seahorse could be developed out of this too.

Always good to have things to dream about/look forward to:D:D

Thanks, Will

I'd like to see a larger version of the little 57 whittler.
3.75" is the perfect size for a "true wharncliffe pocket knife" pattern, IMO. 3.5" is just too small for me to want to try one.

PROJECTS IN PROCESS:

#42 Lock Back
#15 DIAMOND SERIES, Radio Jack & Harness Jack
#15 TC BARLOW

Does anyone know what #15 diamond series is? Is it a #15 with a diamond shaped shield? And what about the barlow, is the blade configuration known?

The 42 will be offered in stainless #42 GEC LB, and carbon steel I suppose #42 TIDIOUTE LB & #42 NORTHFIELD LB.

I have more than enough knives, and GEC keeps tempting me with new offerings all the time.

Look in the radio knife thread. The diamond jack will be a radio knife with a spear/caplifter combo and diamond shield.

The #15's will all be spearpoints. The Radio Jacks are coming in some awesome bone I'm guessing and I'll be needing one of those. I'm always a sucker for the 42's and will check out a Northfield jigged bone and a stainless version. Too darn many nice knives rolling out of PA these days!

Does that include the #15 barlow?

Just a note. The factory is sold out (rare before production starts) on the upcoming run of #42's. So I don't expect these will sit on the shelf long, if they make it to the shelf at all. Hopefully they take that as an indicator to have another run again soon.

Was there a pre-order on the 42's at the factory? I didn't see anything anywhere on the 42's.

He is referring to orders placed by dealers. Apparently all of the production is already spoken for by dealers. If you want to place a pre-order for a GEC knife, work with the dealer of your choice to arrange it. Several of them have procedures listed on their web sites on how to pre-order through them.

Did they drop plans for the 22 Magnum? There's no longer any info on the site :( I hope not, I'm looking forward to that one.

John is correct; dealers must order well ahead of production. GEC actually has them in pre-production, you know, cutting and tempering blades & springs, acquiring handle material, etc., so it's not like they can change the numbers produced much.

I believe this one is on the back burner for now.

I was wondering, what sort of plans for future production do GEC have? They only started in 2006, and as I understand it, some of the cutlers were relatively new and under the tutelage of Bill Howard. Does this mean they are aiming to go for more intricate and finer patterns in the future? I got to wondering this when looking at their small #9 esquire, in comparison to some older examples of the pattern. Theirs did not have quite such fine grinds as the older examples, but their progress over the years thus far seems plain enough.

Will they aim for more complex patterns (a lobster, or windsor pattern), or just randomly choose patterns from the past that they feel like resurrecting? or just go for whatever is popular?

I have no idea actually...hopefully, they do :D
Jokes aside...I think that lately they have made better choices as to which patterns to produce, possibly helped by other people's thoughts (Charlie and Derrick, to name a couple).
To my eye, the latest pattern are not just beautiful slipjoints, but also knives that people can actually carry. I don't know how many Charlows have been produced so far, but I bet that a higher percentage of them rides in pockets, compared to some of the older models (#28 to name one), and that's good news.
Intricate patterns? I don't know if it's time to try a lobster or scout yet. Indeed, they seem to be progressing, and that's good news for traditional cutlery :)

Good question, I think that G.E.C. is going to keep things interesting and still make a quality knife.
It is amazing how far they have come in a short time frame.

There are a few features I'd still like to see from GEC, namely shadow patterns, rattail and/or tip bolsters, extension springs, a sowbelly pattern, and more pen knives in the 3-1/8 to 3-3/8 inch closed lengths. Also some higher grade steels, like CPM-3V or M390, maybe in a "mule-like" program where they do a set pattern (#73) every year with a different new steel in a single blade with micarta handles.

Bill has a great eye for slip joints. I wish I had it. For my part in it, I throw out ideas I like and Bill either says yes or no he can or can't make it and then we start figuring out the details. 9 times out of 10 he nails it. 1 time out of 10 I say, "Can we make this a little this or a little that?"

I like to think those are the times that make all the difference, but who am I kidding? :)

Charlie, on the other hand.... I've talked to him on the phone a couple times and I would take his ideas on pocket knives to the bank. He has forgotten more than I will ever know. Hats off to that guy!

I love the way you think. I would love to see a 3 3/8 shadow stockman. I would love it if they took chapter out of bark river's play book in utilizing a broader range of handle materials like the many shades and types of micartas, delrin, and maybe the use of contrasting liners when appropriate.

I love GECs ambition and what they've done for the traditional knife community, but part of me feels like a lot their patterns are too cumbersome or somehow missing the mark on design. I will say, however, that I love very few patterns that have appealed to me over the years.

The link is back. I've noticed that they'll show some prototype of a new knife then it'll go away for a bit while they're going through the production schedule before it pops back up as they're going to start work on it (or at least a few weeks away from working on it).

But some just completed #42s...
