Lets talk GEC!

Being a Canuck I believe I am excluded from this SFO sale as the Collectors site prohibits any international shipments. Sigh.

So many times I see CONUS only in the BF for sale by individual link as well. Then the exchange rate comes in to bite me if I order from other US dealers for new items.

Oh well,,at least it we always get great weather, hot and sunny up here. Dooh!

Enjoy your beautiful knives fellas! I am jealous.

,,,Mike in Canada

Have you looked into re-shippers or getting friends to forward knives to you? We don't prohibit shipments, we just don't make them due to Fish and Wildlife regulations and sticky fingered customs agents.

Of course, I'd have been happy to steal it... if I'd seen it before the email I got from you today. As some of this thread clearly points out, I'm a ruthless thief of other people's intellectual property. I just cleverly disguise it by using existing GEC patterns and components (sarcasm, boys). All kidding aside, I'd be happy to give you one, Biscuit. Mike's are all spoken for and then some. Derrick's probably won't become available until their done and released. I'm keeping one of each cover for myself. One of them can certainly be yours... just send me a quarter ;)
I said that in complete jest Rob. I didn't create anything. I only took a look at the 2012 Bladeforums knife that I had in my possession already and envisioned it with just the single clip blade. As I stated later after I posted my pics, your SFO is utilizing existing GEC components that just hadn't been put together in that format other than my modification. All in good fun Rob. :D

Since I chimed in earlier today, I want to make clear that I wasn't trying to judge or criticize Rob . I pointed out once or twice why some might take issue though. I was trying to open discussion to a wider theme of when is a custom makers work / patterns fair game for copying . I never thought your SFO was a copy at all. This was more of a reason to ask the same question I had last time this debate came up .

My first couple posts were directly about the new run. My follow up posts were mostly in response to general questions like yours.

My first posts were largely about these remarks in the video. Quote is pretty close but probably has typos since I typed it out at the speed of the video...
But there's a knife that came about oh gosh 25... 27 years ago....that really led me to try to do this special factory order. You guys know this knife. The pattern invented by Tony Bose of Shelbourne Indiana. The Wilfred Works. This is a clip pointed single bladed medium trapper frame that Tony came up with for one of his buddies. His buddy was named Lanny. It is the Lanny's clip of course. This is the limited production Case Tony Bose production model. A Tony Bose custom in this pattern is going to run oh 2 to 3 thousand dollars. The Case/Bose collaboration in 154 cm steel and all stainless frame I think in this trim with the with the jigged bone covers... you know they're new in the mid 400s you can buy them. You know if you really hunt you can buy them for 300 on the secondary market but I really didn't see anyone making this knife or something similar to it with the same thought pattern in a knife people could afford at lets say $100 to $125 knife.

Here are my direct comments about this video.

So Tony Bose graciously gave him a shop tour and interview during which he explained that he earns a living in part from the commission that Case pays to use his patterns. And then he makes a video showing how he will copy Tony's design at a lower price point. It shouldn't be difficult to understand why that's not cool. But it sounds like it will have a full flat grind unlike Tony's design.

He showed the label. Showed the Case/Bose Lanny's clip as the basis for the pattern. He compared it directly with the 74. He showed some other GEC knives for size comparison (sort of unnecessary since he had a 74). And he showed a couple of knives as examples of the 2 cover options: Charlie's rope knife as an example of the bone and Charlies 35 harness jack as an example of ebony. He also showed the sketch for the standard GEC production run which will be slightly different --different swedge and covers.

I think both cover materials were very good choices. I'm glad he's using a different shield and grind than the Case/Bose Lanny's clip so that it's not a close reproduction.

Is the 73 Hunter going to be a standard dealer knife??? Looks like something I am interested in... John

If I"m reading Mike's early reserve page correctly he is referring to both his and Rob's SFO as being a "Muskrat Clip" blade. Are they one in the same? or are there two different blades? I'm thinking Rob and Mike are both here and one or the other could clear this up. There is a clip blade pictured on the GEC site, but which one is it if they are different? I'm on the reserve list for one of Mike's but was put on standby for one of Rob's only 15 seconds in. It is only a knife, but also one I really wanted. Maybe there's still hope.
Take care, and Merry Christmas all,
Rick

TheApostleP, thanks for all the hard work you put into the SFO project. I wasn't able to get a reservation like many on here because I was at work and am not near my phone or a computer. But I can only imagine the amount of time it took to get these on the production floor and can appreciate all the hard work. Can't wait to see how the these come out!

Anyway, I feel you have the right to respond to critics appropriately and shed some light on the subject before they start pointing fingers.

Who votes that Bob should get a free one.

Merry Christmas my friends.

It's up to you how to respond. I will be civil whether or not you choose to do the same-- disagreements don't need to create animosity. And I lost interest in this discussion before you joined so I don't really have any interest in whether or not it continues.

The quote from your video is pretty direct and clear about the thought process. Even now you say "I wanted GEC to build a knife with that thought pattern, using components and a pattern they already had, but they hadn't built in this configuration yet". The only difference is that you left out the name Tony Bose this time.
