Lets talk GEC!

Anyone else noticed the #38 special on gec's site?

The Congress got a whittler added. I love the shape of the blade but it's to much like a weird toothpick to me with single blade. Anyone else want to see a 38 special with a small stockman style sheepsfoot on the back end of the single spring? I would buy one in every handle material.

Absolutely, yes. I would be very much on board with that.

I'm a little worried now because I have one on the way from DLT a Ebony Stallion non sfo with no pictures . Although I've been pretty lucky with DLT on previous purchases .

i don't think you have too much to worry about -- ebony handles don't have as wide of a variance, unless i'm mistaken.

Well. Ebony isn't dyed bone, right? It could have more Grain or light spots but that would be cool, I think?

This is true , I think I just got my head wrapped a little to tight around that yellow and green jig bone lol .

I hope it's not dyed bone or it's going to be a whole new animal [emoji14]
I think your right different variances in wood can be a plus [emoji106]
Thanks I feel much better now [emoji16]

I actually like that yellow, but it's probably got a lot to do with my college football team of choice being black and yellow. Go Hawkeyes!

I'll be scouring the for sale forums and hoping to get lucky on one on the secondary market.

They are still available at some dealers!

I also appreciate when the knives are photographed individually, especially stag and elk  There are different preferences for cover materials and it's nice to be able see what you are buying.

I thought part of the reason for using camel bone was the variation.
One of the things I love about camel bone is that each piece takes the dye differently. Every one is unique.

Even regular cattle bone has some variation. The subject has also come up in discussions of Case knives. Some view it as unique variation others don't like it. Either way, photos are helpful.

An interesting thing I learned at the rendezvous is that camel bone is much more dense than cattle bone, and inconsistently dense as well. This would explain such variation of color depth vs cattle bone (typically). And also why you don't see much jigged camel bone.

I agree wholeheartedly with preferring separate photos for each knife, but the variation in jigged bone knives probably isn't great enough to warrant the dealer's time (typically).

Even with individual photos, there are times when there's a hot commodity, that I wish there was a "random" or "dealer's choice" option just to guarantee you get one.

I wonder if folks would be willing to pay a little extra to be able to pick from pictures? It would make it worth the dealers time to take photos of knives. He could also offer some without photos, at the lower price.

Here's one that meako posted

Just find a Baylor or Oregon fan to sell it to.

I quit buying knives from dealers without individual pictures because I ended up with variations in the covers that I didn't care for. For example, I'd like to get a cocobolo 74, but I held out to see what the NF was going to be. There's cocobolo's available, but no individual pictures so I'm passing. I was a bit on the fence about it because I have some esky zulus and another 74. With the 13, 38, 71 burlap, 48, 54's coming up I figured I should spread out my knife funds.

The funny thing with the differences in the cover material is, for every person out there that hates the way the covers turned out there's someone else trying to find that exact knife that I dislike...

Danke: You're right about both points. But, the differences we are talking about cannot be attributed to differences in post processing or color settings on a monitor. I recognize that there can be some wide differences with monitors and posting any photo on the web is a crapshoot but, these are substantial differences. Here are two examples. Sorry DLT I borrowed your photos.

Are those camel bone? Apparently there's even more variation in the dye results then with cow. I'd never had a camel covered knife, and when I ordered my Coyote, I chose one of the lighter versions of "Brown" on the theory that the bone on mine must be denser, therefore stronger. :D I agree in cases like this it really was nice to be able to see pictures of the individual knife. Someone else may have been disappointed with this one:

I love it!
