Lets talk GEC!

Finally. I was beginning to think they were victims of alien abduction.

Alan, this run of H73s really has been the most odd thing. If it were any further on the back burner, it would have been on someone else's stove. That being said, I really enjoy my Tortoise Shell Bird and Trout. It's not the most balanced knife in the world, but I appreciate the hefty handle. It's not like it's being used hours on end anyways. Don't think I'll have to worry about hand fatigue...

It's taken so long Shawn and I've changed my mind so many times I'm not sure what I'll do if I find it.

I just got my first GEC, a 73 in cocobolo. It's a beautiful knife, and even though I did do my research, it's still a bit bigger than I expected. How are you guys liking the 83? Has anyone handled one of those and a case sway back gent?

I have 2 of the 73's that I like very much . Their shape convinced me to also get some 83's . Fine knife , just smaller than the 73 and it is a Lockback . The pull to open an 83 is basically nothing as compared to a 73 . I just prefer the size of the 73 for a working knife and the size of the 83 for a casual or dress knife.

Harry

Ill add a few pics of my own ;)

I just like this one

A few photo's that get to the point :)

It's great to see your old trusty #55 again.

Mine has been in the RFP daily again since October. I carried it alot a few years ago, then experimented with some others for awhile, but one day in October I just dropped it in my pocket and it hasn't left my presence since. I've always have liked the 55.

Man oh man I miss some of those knives......the 55 is my absolute favorite gec. The pull and snap is still the best of any I have handled. The liner lock is non detectable in use and saved my fingers a few times on the job site. I have been carrying it a bit here and there lately but it deserves much more pocket time. I'll carry it tomorrow and shoot a couple pics. Love to see some pics of your 55

Does anyone know if the 13 whittlers are split back like the 38 whittlers were?

I was wondering this too so I poured through all the pics as closely as I could looking for some indication.
By my eye, it looks like they are. If you look at pic 7 of 72 on the #13 series blog right now, I spy a spacer present at the end of the two small blades, and no corresponding spacer at the main blade end.

Plus, correct me if I am wrong but I don't think GEC has done a knife designated "whittler" yet, without such construction. Thus, they get the benefit of the doubt from me.

They called the three spring 79 workhorse a whittler. I too believe the 13 is splitback

I asked them on their Instagram pic of the first Whittler in Micarta, and they said it was a Split Back :)

I'm not a fan of the off center shield on the non-whittler 13's. I know it's been talked about before on other runs, but just looks odd to me. Huh, just noticed the Speaker Jack (bottom picture) is coming with wrap around springs.

They kind of lost me with having two pen blades on a 3 blade whittler. I would much rather have a main blade, pen and coping blades. I guess I'll wait for the possible future reissue of the 38 whittler.

GEC said the rationale behind the 2 pens was to stay true to traditional whittlers of old. I agree with you about pen/coping preference. I like the thought of staying true to a pattern, but there is a balance between staying true to a pattern and relevance to modern day living. I could see how someone that is doing a lot of whittling would like having a second sharp pen blade, but also don't understand because someone that is doing a lot of whittling might want a coping for other detail work. Either way, I'm happy with how these turned out and there's so many variations that hopefully everyone is able to get what serves them best.

It's their company, their knives, their designs/patterns, and I'm a huge fan, but traditional was thrown out the window when they put coping blades in barlows. Glad they did as it's a good fit.

THey put coping & pen blades in their 89 whittler... go figure....
