Lets talk GEC!

Thanks for the input, Jeff and Ryan.
Ryan, thanks for mentioning photos of actual knives! I don't visit GEC's site very often, so I'm not very familiar with what's there and how to find it. But after seeing you refer to actual photos of the DLT SFO knives, I was able to find a pic of a pile of stamped blades that have the number we'd expect: 542117. I imagine the artwork on the new releases page involved some cutting and pasting during which some intended editing was missed. I know I've certainly done that myself a time or two.

So it seems the #38 Special is released in the red micarta. Looks really slick, I'm excited about Bocote wood version. :)

The 5/18/17 production schedule is the most disappointing of all time - for me lol. They just moved a few boxes around.. why even post an updated production schedule if there's no changes.. so weird.

That update was a big tease!

Although, it doesn't really matter if it's the Calf Roper or the Calf Pen, I'll be needing at least one of each!

At first, I derided the 38 Special, blade too skimpy needs 2 blades, but on seeing the photos on their site I'm rapidly reassessing:)

Nice sunk joint, should be easy in the pocket and good scale options- Red Micarta, stripey Bocote and Tractor Green for the Tids. I'm eager to see what the Norths will be like, perhaps an unusual jigged bone? I'd be after that. In the past, I would certainly have wanted a Stag if it's not too thick, but in the era of no shields, they lost their allure for me. A well inlet shield makes the knife in my view.....

Will,

I totally agree. The #38 is sure looking a lot nicer than expected. I did reserve one in NF bone on the off chance they choose something really awesome. The abalone is perhaps a little flashy for me but the right stag could be interesting.

Agreed Jamie, a good choice of handles even if I'm one of those rare birds that can't stand Abalone... But it makes a refreshing change as an option, Appaloosa Bone would've been my preference or Calico Smooth. Then there's Dead Skunk...

The Bocote has my attention. The pattern seemed really cool with the slim clip blade. Can't wait!
I am completely with Will on the no shield stag thing.
I think the shield sets off the knife and also the UNXLD emblem identifies the knife.
How do others feel about this?
I'm sure it is a cost saving thing for GEC.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, do the stag models not have a shield? The graphic of the upcoming wood model seemed to have a standard shield on it.

Unrelated...does anyone know what kind of oil GEC uses at the factory?

The #38 isn't even remotely my thing. But that bocote is absolutely stunning!!! Has anybody ever bought a knife, despite the pattern, just because the covers looked so incredibly good?

No shields on the stag anymore. GEC made the announcement a year or so ago.

(can't seem to get the quote feature to work)

My understanding is that Bill Howard was gently coaching one of his cutlerers about shielding stag when he was challenged to do it. Taking up the challenge Bill spent some time properly shielding some stag and then made the decision to no longer put a shield on stag covers.

Just like with the 54s, I said I don't need any 38s. But I do love red linen micarta. I should really talk myself out of it.

Comparisons to the Laguiole don't help my cause as I do love those things too...

Looks like there will be a 38 SFO for the Federal Wildlife Officers Association. I didn't see that one coming.
