Lets talk GEC!

Now I'm starting to warm up to the wharncliff. Looks like it might be easier to open with more of the knife showing.

I'm all for a new shield, but not that one. I love how GEC often uses the simple, symmetric "UN-X-LD" to represent/identify Northfield knives, and have long wished for a Tidioute counterpart. Without such, Tidioute shields are either bare or feature TIDIOUTE stamped in what looks to me like an o'er large, utilitarian font.

"NORTHFIELD UN-X-LD"?

You lose both the symmetry of "UN-X-LD" on a shield shape for which the letters are perfectly suited (the centered 'X') and the cache of simple elegance and branding, and are left with a cluttered, redundant mishmash.

Says picky I.

Picky me too then:)

I like the cloud shield on some Northfields, however the hot dog on the Tidioute doesn't cut the mustard... Sorry.

I vote no shield on any of them. :D This could make the difference in buying one. Have these sketches been finalized?

More observations on the upcoming #92 Eureka Jack. I prefer the bareheaded look of the Tidioute version, but like the lined bolsters of the Northfield. I also like the blade swedge on the Northfield BUT with a long pull not a nail nice. All that would make it hard for me to nail down a preference between the versions.

Semi off-topic - anyone have a pic of a #92 Eureka Jack next to a #12 Toothpick?

Unpredictably, the spear #92 could be my next knife.
We'll see what handle options they offer.
I was wishing for a spear with a long pull, but this one looks odd...and I might go for the barehead anyway ;)

I'm not sure what Gec was thinking with those new Northfield shields. For that reason alone I wouldn't buy that 92 model.

I seem to remember threads where folks had 3 bladed knives (I think specifically a Case Sowbelly) that the secondary blades were removed making it single blade. The 2 other blades were then given covers and made into a second knife. Not exactly the same here but I had wanted a slim clip blade #48 Jack before they were available as the Diamond Edge jack. Its possible.

Very nice picture/examples Trand. I like the Tractor Red 48 in particular, a kind of Winterbottom jigged bone GEC could issue again. Here's my Tractor Green version.

Thanks Will although I'm partial to the green one like yours instead. That's why I had the red bone modified and rehandled instead of a green. Don't worry, I did get another Tractor Red bone one to replace it. Besides, I was also able to get my hands on this one (1 of 3) but I think it would have looked even better in green :D

I took this group pic of ebony a while ago while I still had the #12. I ordered it by model number which is why they're on opposite ends of the picture. I hope it helps a little. The #12 is 4" closed with ~3" clip blade.

Wow, 1/3, that's crazy. I'm surprised they do runs that short.
It was when they made the 440C #48s. They made a few with leftover #48 covers. Here are Amber Grizzly Cut bone (1 of 3), Brown Dyed Curly Maple (1 of 2), Cherry jigged bone (1 of 2) and the Tractor Red. They had a 1 of 1 in Sunset Yellow jigged bone and Amber Fine jigged bone that I missed out on which would have completed my group :grumpy:

Edit: Here are the 2012 production numbers for these. I wasn't able to get any of the short run 2 blade ones either :(

Wow I like that single spear Northfield version! But that nail nick looks like it could be a problem if the spring is much over about a 5 on the scale. Hmmm I'm watching this as I LOVE the 92 :)

@2Dead

Does the 1/1 mean that gec kept the only one? I thought they always kept one example?

I can't say for certain but I don't believe they always do. I've heard the same and wouldn't be surprised if they do for normal runs but I'm not certain it is true for short runs. I seem to remember this one "Amber Fine Jig Bone 1 pc. no serial number" being available at a dealer when they came out. Also, when the #85 in elephant ivory was released, #02-#07 (I've seen pics of #07) were available for purchase but they only made 6 in total (listed in the 2012 totals). IIRC, they never made a #01 for that one for themselves to keep. With regards to the #48s in 440C, its possible they kept the 1/1s, or possible some of the dealers did (they're knife collectors/users too), or someone just beat me out on them.

Anyone who has both care to comment on the Magnum vs the Pemberton? Comparison photos? Are the blades the same size?

Don't have the photos, but I have both and like both. They are VERY similar.....same blades, same size blades, and about the same pull (about a 5) on both knives. If you liked the Pemberton (and I did), then you will like the magnum. A very usefull knife that carries much bigger than it appears, and is terrific for any small work you will do with a knife. Disappears in the pocket too.

Only drawback on this little knife is the price......seems a little high for such a small knife....but maybe that's just me. It is, after all, a high quality made knife.

Just received my Magnum today (thanks Barry!). Here's a few comparison photos with a two blade Pemberton (the Magnum is cocobolo and the Permberton is snakewood). Very, very similar. The Magnum is smaller, but in my opinion, you'd have to do a side by side to know the difference. I'd be hard pressed to say which I like better.
