Lets talk GEC!

Question for my fellow GECafiles; has anyone seen a production picture of a looking glass cover before assembly?

I'm wondering if the acrylic is poured/bonded to the shell material, or if the shell just acts like a liner and the covers are just pinned together.

Many pardons if I'm off with my answer, but the way I understand it is that the abalone is embedded in the acrylic so that there is a thin layer (.5mm?) of acrylic between the liner and abalone.

Awesome! Hard enough to navigate around the new site, it was about the forum knife and...... nevermind. Guess I'll just not waste my time around here

It was about a gec knife, sold by this forum, for this specific sub forum. No one is going to go to another area of the site to talk about that. Over moderation at its finest.

Really?

CK's early reserve system may well be the fairest way to parcel out these high-demand SFOs. I don't really know if that's true and so I'm not criticizing with what follows, but rather relating my experience with it. It's only panned out for me once (last year's NF 77). When my phone chimed announcing the arrival of the alert text, I immediately, and I mean within seconds, jumped to the CK Early Reserve page and clicked the link to the #25 reservations. They were all closed already. Maybe there's a delay in the texts reaching me for some unknown reason, but this is typically how it goes for me when these SFOs drop. OK, cue the violins... :)

I have a black pearl that appears to be able to collect dust/oil between the shell and the acrylic, so I'm wondering if it has delaminated or if that's just how they're put together.

You can only see it in certain angles, I was just curious.

I have been looking into that option as well. A sheet of 5" x 9.5" LVS is around $275 for the thickness and quality desired. Then you take some loss while working it. At that, LVS still shows seams worse than ALVS (official name of LG). So, at about 20% of the cost and a bit more attractive from the straight on view - I am figuring out why they use ALVS. Nobody wants a seam, and they will be obvious on at least 1/3rd of the options as you simply can't afford the waste to cut around them.

I ended up ordering one of the 38's in ALVS. I told myself I was passing on the 38. I like the pattern, but the blade option for this run wasn't what I preferred. I also told myself I didn't have any interest in Looking Glass abalone. The main reason I didn't want LG is that (in the past) you can see under the scales to the pins. It just seemed weird to me. I changed my mind when I ran across a 38 abalone that I thought looked great in pictures. I've never had ALVS in hand so, against my knife plans, that never seem to work out anyway, I picked one up. I'm very happy with it. It appears to have a thicker sheet of abalone compared to what I've seen in the past. Abalone sheets very in thickness. The more expensive grade A sheets are thicker. To jump up in size it's roughly $40 more for each increase in size of a 4" by 7" sheet. The sheet GEC used on my knife is thick enough to where I can't see under or through the covers. Anyway, super happy with it. My wife, who has no interest in knives, saw it and to my surprise she said she wanted one because it was "pretty!". So, in the end, I ended up with two of these. I haven't decided if this is a good thing or not. I'm happy she shows interest in a hobby of mine, but at the same time I'm a bit worried that she may start to think other knives are "pretty" and she wants those too.

I wasn't huge on this run of 38's either, but I've wanted an abalone GEC for too long. :)

I actually really like the looking glass knives. I feel like it accentuates the beauty of the shell underneath.

I'm a fan now. I hope to someday have an 85 or 77 in abalone.

The 77 Northfield Barlow (first run two main blades clip wharnie) was LVS, no acrylic.

Thanks for sharing that. Especially that side-on pic. I see what you mean. The clear acrylic is completely masked by the abalone. Very well done.

I thought lvs is acrylic, but not a full layer. Like a stabilized material.

ALVS (LG was GEC's previous name for it) is Acrylic Laminated Veneer Sheet; LVS is Laminated Veneer Sheet. No acrylic in LVS; just many layers of abalone.

I think probably this run has a thicker black backing liner, but it is essentially the same material previously called Looking Glass (LG). There is no significant difference in thickness of abalone veneer or price, as the only difference is acrylic. As a note, the sheets are actually 5.5 x 9.5". It does look nice with the thicker liner, but I still can't warm up to the obvious seams.

I was expecting it to be like others I've seen where it's a paper thin sheet of abalone with clear acrylic on both sides. This abalone seems thicker with mostly abalone on the back of the covers.

How 'bout some 85's in LVS!
