Lets talk GEC!

Thanks for your support guys! You make me feel like Cool Hand Luke. (For those of you too young to know who Cool Hand Luke was, think anti-hero who refuses to conform. One of the best movies of all time by the way.). The moderators “ have got my mind right.” Just kidding Gary, please don’t put me back in the box!

Mark, how is your Unicorn? There have been quite a few posts about them not holding up. I hope yours has. The Pioneer Bone was the one I kept from that run of 25’s.

Leslie, It has only had light use but seems to be holding up just fine. I really enjoy that one, thank you! The pioneer bone you kept is just great too. They are a nice little pattern:thumbsup:

I don't have a 72 but

Thanks Lance, the Forum Police moved that post to a different thread. I did not know that is was a no no to post a photograph of a traditional knife with a modern knife. I have only been posting for a few days, and all I seem to do is make mistakes. I don’t think I will have a long career here on Blade Forums! Here is another photo of that stag 72 with a Cougar Clawed Churchill. Hopefully, I will be safe with two GEC knives! All joking aside, I am not trying to be a rebel. I was just unaware.

I saw your Clawed Bone 72 on a different thread. What a nice knife! I usually only allow myself one example of the patterns I like. Otherwise, I would have one of those also. I made up for that shortcoming by getting the Clawed Churchill. I love the way GEC carves and dyes the bone. I also see that you also use your 72. It’s by far my most used knife. I use everything I collect, but that 72 is always front and center.
I don't have a 72 but now that I see yours, I sure would like one, but in thick stag.
I know how you feel about mistakes. Blade Forums is losing good people like you because of how they feel about the way they are treated. I support you. Make sure you tell them how you feel. That is the only way they will understand.

Thanks New Blades. I believe we have it sorted out now. The good part is that Gary helped me discover the traditional and modern pairings thread. Man, there are some beautiful combinations there! No shortage of CRK knives and other beauties. I am going to start taking photographs of my moderns with good old traditionals. I appreciate your support. I have noticed that you can be a rebel yourself! Just kidding Gary!

I did not say it wasn't in black and white. It is the way many feel they are treated at times. And a mistake is made not intentionally and the sub feels like they are slapped on the wrist so to speak . Many times a new or experienced sub does not spend their entire time reading the fine lines. And often times there are discretionary decisions that mods make in which much content goes unaddressed and especially a new sub looks at those posts as an example of acceptable and in reality is not. Those examples are black and white too! So the black and white theory had it's flaws. Another prime example is the purchasing and ordering. How many times to we talk about that , especially on these new runs, and even mods take part in those discussions . That is black and white too. Kind of biased.

And the 73 when it locks is a liner lock. I prefer the lockback 72 only because it is a little slimmer.
And often times the liner has quite of front to back side play. The calf pen for sure, even though the fit and finish on those is not as tight as they are really meant for working and not collecting as compared to the tidioutes and Northwoods.

Nice 73's Leslie!
Here is my one and only 72 that is NOT a lockback.

I have to say that, despite the rules and miscues, the porch is still the best place to be. It’s amazing how few people in society can appreciate these beautiful knives, so it is nice to have a community to share them with. Otherwise, it would be a pretty lonely hobby. I wish there could be rendezvouses around the country to allow us to get together in person.

I appreciate both the passion of collectors like NewBlades and the work of volunteers like Gary to keep the porch friendly. That tension is necessary to keep things interesting.

Very true and well said sir. Thank for that positive comment.

I believe both the 72 and 73 have been made without locks. Not sure about the percentages. My lockback 72 has a tiny bit of blade wobble which does annoy me. I might become one of those collectors who just stays away from locking GEC knives. I just have a hard time understanding why they cannot get that down. I have several locking knives from other, less expensive, makers that are completely solid. And they lock up tight without otherwise compromising the action or movement of the blade, (which is what some people say GEC would have to sacrifice for no wobble.)

That’s the reason I was sort of glad to see the upcoming 43 will not lock, although the size and design of that knife screams out for a lock.

NewBlades, you and I would easily recognize each other at a Rendezvous. We would be the ones smoking cigars!

Haha. F$&@'n t***bs!
Nice pair, Will. I picked up a 55 recently, and it has become a surprise favorite.
Watch the language. Emphasis can be expressed with out the asterisks and abbreviated expletives. We do not welcome such in the Traditional Forum.

Depending on the implementation, "skeleton construction" may or may not be considered a modern feature.

You're right, Frank. Apologies. Joke gone wrong.

Leslie Tomville Very fine Cougar Claw example you have:thumbsup: Been over the moon about mine, as I keep droning on about it:D

Thank you Will Power. I have been carrying it all day. It’s such a big knife, but you still barely know it’s there.

Hey Leslie
Hate to blow my own trumpet but
Im probably one of the highest ranking
porch members when it comes to preposterous postings and fatuous flumgummery (not a real word ).
I have been pinged by the mods several times mostly in my early years. I clambered up the steps in 2006....and Im still here.
We live and learn. One thing I can say is that despite my errant ways I have never committed the ultimate travesty of mentioning mod*#n,tac&%@l knives.:D
Stay with it mate.
