Lets talk GEC!

I know GEC is watching & laughing, so......Everybody (me!) wants a run of clip point 77 Barlows, with chestnut or red saw cut bone covers. Is that too darn much to ask?

If I remember correctly CK had a facebook poll and the next run of 77 barlows is spear point. The only person that knows what it will be for sure is Mike, but I'm pretty sure he said he was planning on going with the poll decision. The poll was quite some time ago so who knows what we will end up with - if anything. I'm still holding on to some hope for a sheepsfoot 77 barlow.

Since we're all having fun speculating, I'm going to toss my thoughts out there. My sense is that GEC honors a system they used in the past where if a person paid for the tooling for an SFO (an new pattern or variant by definition of needing new tooling), GEC gave them some exclusivity to it. Thus, #15 barlows are linked to Charlie, Northwoods have claim to the Norfolk (as an example) and I believe Collectorknives.net has a claim to the 77 barlow. I don't have any inside information, so this is my speculation. But I doubt GEC would run a Barlow on the 77 barlows for anyone but Collectorknives without permission from Collectorknives. Again, I'm a little uncomfortable here "saying" what GEC would and would not do, but this is my sense. FWIW.

If this is the secret soon to be announced Northwoods model, this would have to be a #78 Barlow right as I believe CK has the rights to 77 Barlows. I though that I read somewhere that CK has the exclusive on 77 barlows and 85 Northfields (trim). I would really be excited for a 78 Barlow in a clip point, just hope my bank account recovers from the recent bountiful GEC knife releases in time.

If I recall, there are 4 sizes of barlow at GEC, with the #25 (tiny) being the general production variant. I think it is pretty much a gentleman's agreement that the #15 (small) is Charlie's, the #77 (medium) is mine, and seems like Derrick has the large barlow frame. Although I am hoping a #77 is not too far out, I have nothing that should have showed up on a tray at this point. Also, the factory would not drop a #78 Barlow right down on top of a #77 sized Barlow. So, my expectation is that they filled some time on the line by assembling some spare parts barlows. And if they are on a #78 frame - that would be a hot ticket item. But I heard no details on what the mystery sighting was either.

I am really happy to see that GEC has started building the Smith and Sons MudBug SFO, I've been patiently waiting. I see that GEC lists 2 natural linen micarta covers; dark and light. When I ordered mine there was one choice for Natural Linen Micarta , does anyone know if there is another dealer that gets this knife, being an SFO I woudln't think so, but, why 2 NLM choices?

As luck would have it I called Smith and Sons with that same question yesterday. And was told that they have to wait to see what the acutal color variations will be. When they have them in hand; they can make a determination of what differentiates light from dark. Or if there is even enough difference to make a decision necessary. He answered several other questions and was very friendly and helpful.
edit to add: He also said that if "you intend to use it, it will darken anyway."

It was not so long ago that the Beer Scouts were the hot topic.
So very true...I carry a beer scout with me at least 2-3 days a week. To me they are perfect size for daily carry (15 Frame)...all of mine have excellent walk/talk/fit/finish. Dare I say we start rumblings of another run in near future...

I also wonder if guys (and gals) working there ever get to make their own one of a kind "lunch time" knives from spare parts laying around as happens in many manufacturing shops.

We would call those "government jobs" where I used to work. :D

Will GEC replace blades?? I got a 71 that needs a new blade.. Thanks in advance.. John

Is "lunch time knives " another way to say parts that went home in someone's lunch box?

I'm all in for starting the rumblings for another run, but I doubt we will see any for at least a year after all the caplifters are gone from all the dealer inventories. It would be cool if they made some Beer Scouts for the Rendevous.

Nice Charred Beer Barrel Oak Beer Scout. I carry mine several times a week.

You captured the gold flake nicely. It is hard to get that in a photo.

Thanks Travman, that is a goodbye photo. I am donating that knife and a couple others to The Big Biscuit College Fund.

Rather than a new Beer Scout, I would love to see a camp knife. One smaller than that huge Texas Camp Knife. One designed and useful for modern camping. I would actually like to use it and carry it without needing a sheath.
