Lets talk GEC!

Thanks Travman, that is a goodbye photo. I am donating that knife and a couple others to The Big Biscuit College Fund.

Rather than a new Beer Scout, I would love to see a camp knife. One smaller than that huge Texas Camp Knife. One designed and useful for modern camping. I would actually like to use it and carry it without needing a sheath.
That is pretty much the consensus amoung those of us that love GEC and scout knives. We all want GEC to make a scout knife based on the 35 frame.

Is "lunch time knives " another way to say parts that went home in someone's lunch box?
I was suggesting something a bit more above board actually. In our shop, at lunch or break guys will work on their own projects in the machine shop or foundry. Just wondering if one of the perks at GEC is getting to build yourself a knife at some point. I think Medford lets each employee build his own Medford after their 1 year anniversary with the company. Usually a unique finish or combination of components based on Medford frames and blades.

Yes, could be interested depending on the bone types.:)

Will it be my first 18 knife from GEC though? Maybe, but let's be patient...;)

I’m definitely interested in in a Northfield 44 for myself and my dad.

Growing up, my dad carried a 1988 Remington Muskrat with the bullet shield. He lost the knife after carrying it for 10 years. So the bullet shield makes it a fitting gift for him.

Anyone else excited for the #44
Gunstock?

I'm with Will on this. Though I am intrigued by the pattern, my interest levels will be dependent on the cover options. @r8shell's Gunstock (I can't recall the pattern #) in the aged whitish bone has a lot of appeal to me. It will be interesting to see what the options will be when they are inclined to tell us.

I heard rumors about an upcomung Northfiled on the #78 pattern. No website updates for three days. Could mean they are working on it behind the scenes.

Do you mean Northwoods? If yes, then I think I heard something about that as well. Some 78 Barlow speculation...

Makes sense. And also suits what Derrick posted on Instagram about something exciting early 2018.

How do the GEC liner locks compare to their slipjoints of the same pattern?

Generally speaking the walk and talk is about the same, stout pull on the blades and half stops. I like the linerlock for the added safety, but with the half stop on both the linerlock model and slip joint it’s not a huge concern.

Do you notice the protruding lock tab at all when bearing down or after extended use?

Not at all, the tab falls in between my index and middle finger and is almost unnoticeable when in use. I’ve skinned a few deer back to back and never had a complaint. Same as when gripping tight to make a fire stick, or shave off some tinder for a campfire it’s easy to bear down on it and have no complaints.

I like to reverse grip the knife when opening the chest cavity up and the tab is a good resting point for my thumb.
