Lets talk GEC!

Ah geez... this one will do it. I've been out of the knife market for a while now but this one will get me off the fence. A serpentine pen with clip and bone? Single spring? Beautiful bone?

Yep. I know already that I won't resist the siren call this time around. Whether it gets carried or goes to the safe is an open question though.

Trand - I personally would say the #66s have a pull on a 6 or even 7. At least the springs on my #66s are stronger than on any of my pioneers.

(I just played around with my old battlehorse #66 Serpentine Jack) :D

I don't know, I just tested my user and another and they seem pretty close to the pioneer, electrician, and farmer I had out, perhaps a little stronger but no way near a 7 to me. Then again, I've been playing with a #73 this morning and its blades are about an 8-9.

The #66's strongest point of tension seems to be just as you're opening it and just before it snaps open. The Vics seem to be a little before it snaps open but easier when opening. Perhaps thats the difference in perception?

My Rotten Banana 66 has a decent enough pull for sure, around 7 but it is a longpull if that makes any diff. The secondary is certainly milder and not having half-stops makes for a very smooth opening and fast close :D The Tidioute 66 I had, I gave away....

However, I think the pull is likely to satisfy most people, firmish but no way awkward or a nail-lifter.

I have a Rotten Banana 66 and a Yellow Rose 66 Serp Jack and the pull on the main is more in the 7 range on mine I'd say especially the Yellow Rose. But like was mentioned above it is a little stiff right when you first open but then it pops right open. The pen blade on both of mine is about a 4.

I'll be curious to see if the single spring slim 66 is soft much like the White Owl or if it will be a little firmer. Some people complain the White Owl is to soft but I like mine and find the pull just about perfect.

I think the stiffness scale is a pretty individual thing... ;)

Trand - I didn´t want to offend you in any way.

Will - the #66 you sent mit will ever have a special place in my collection... I don´t use it for food prep and keek the blades & joints well oiled :)

None taken at all Andi :) That's the benefit of this forum, information freely given from different people to hopefully get an idea on what to expect. And I don't think our experiences are that different, no broken nails or floppy blades right :)

Exactely :)

If my Charlow is a 5, then my 66 jack is definitely a 6, and a 7 if I haven't oiled and cleaned it in a bit. Sometimes I think it's my gold standard for good balance between ease of opening and authoritative walk and talk.

My #92s just landed. Really like this pattern! It's lightweight/slim in hand, nice walk/talk, light/medium pull, fit and finished on par with what you'd expect from GEC. I'm happy with both of them. Both are easy to pinch open, the wharncliffe is definitely easier; and both my examples are sharp straight from the factory. (not the case with the #15s I received)

I'm still not sure which one I prefer yet!!! Sorry about glare in these pics, it's really sunny here in northern cali right now:D

Eagerly awaiting my 92's. I love this pattern and had a tough time deciding between labels, covers and blade shape. Not a bad apple in the bunch that I can see.

I am with ya Jamie. So many good choices, I am waiting to see if a stag grabs me but the Rosewood and both...ah heck, not a bad apple indeed :D

The Spear blade on the 92 Talons looks different from my 92 Ureka Jack's spear blade (more point, less belly). Does anyone have a side-by-side pic ?

Yeah, the stag is looking good but I typically like mine bareheaded. Still may be persuaded though once some real pics surface on the dealer sites. In the meantime I have micarta and rosewood wharnies and a green bone spear inbound to choose from. As mentioned, I love this pattern and my only current 92 is a rosewood covered Champlin. I also sold my Viper as I knew I would be replacing it with a 92 wharnie.

Good choices . I have a viper and houndstooth that are looking for another amigo! Only time will tell if they all stay together. Not sure if I want to stay with the bone theme or go wood.

I'll be sure to give you my impressions of the covers when they arrive along with the Tidioute/Northfield differences. Might help narrow it down some.
