Lets talk GEC!

Can't wait for the full range of the 66 Slim single-spring to appear, another point of agreement with you Jeff.

Here's the only legit picture of my Houndstooth with another friend from GEC and a Schatt in the frame too.

Thanks, Will

I thought you folks might be interested in a side-by-side comparison of the new 66 pen along side the 66 jack. They look similar in profile, but when you look closely, there is a big difference in the build and overall heft. These are the first out, Purple Sage Jig Bone. They are both excellent patterns, although they require a little break-in to overcome the "newness" of 'em, as some are a little stiff at first. Hope you enjoy takin' a gander:

I also appreciate the pictures, I didn't really understand the difference. Looks great to me!

Yes, the pen version is very slim and trim; a lot of blade in a compact package.

Thanks Barry. I have a few of the jacks and am looking forward to the slim. I like the Turkish clip main. It looks quite useable as an EDC blade.

Coming from a non-traditional point of view originally in my interest in knives, my entrance into and conversion to traditionals has been very informative. Just a year ago I wouldn't have thought that a sheepfoot charlow would have been more than sufficient for a day of weed eating, fishing, cooking, and yard work. However, now I do realize that a charlow is not only capable of 99% of what I need in those capacities, but can do it in a sensible and stylish manner. That brings me to the point I want to make: I think more and more people are finding the usefulness and classic nature of traditional slip joints, largely due to Great Eastern Cutlery. I see more and more traditionals (mostly GECs) being posted in the general knife discussion forums and in other edc oriented forums. Being that a huge portion of these knives are made by GEC, I think the uniquely high Quality to Price ratio that GEC can, and consistently does, produce has spurred a resurgence of traditional knives in the general "knife knut" population.

Maybe this is off topic, but I think GEC is doing a good thing for traditional knives, knives in general, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Very useful pix thanks Barry. The low joints on the Slim appeal a lot -about time GEC tackled sunk-joints mind. The cut-out for the nick is another distinguishing feature of course. I like the Purple Sage Bone (how do they come up with hat name??) but my choice will be the Red Sawn Bone, looks exceptional I think. However, I want to see the Northfield bone version too, could be needing TWO of these knives.... Single-spring has always been my favourite.

Regards, Will

The red saw-cut bone models are a new style bone for GEC's knives, previously only seen on Charlie's TC Barlows. I'm anxious to see them as well as the Northfield version. The saw-cut is only being used on the slim, as far as I know.

I don't know who comes up with the names, Will, but the bone is definitely not purple; it is beautiful though. Maybe they check out colors at the paint store where they have 101 names for 'white'. lol

I'll tell you one thing, they really got the blade grind correct on the slim version. I was wondering if they would go all out and give it a really thin grind. Seeing that it is a blade style that is exactly what you'd want to skin a small animal or clean a fish a thin grind is called for. And they got it perfect.

This is easily the sharpest GEC knife I have owned. It gives you everything that the white owl does but with a main blade better suited for a hunter/fisherman like myself.

Couple updates on the 66's:

Acrylic Tidioutes will be in Red River and Smokey Pearl;

Annnd... looks like the Northfield will be in Garnet Jig Bone and is gonna be a stunner!
(also the usual wood and stag versions, but I forgot to ask what wood... doh!)

You wouldn't know if they are going to use those bolsters with divots for the Northfield version do you? If so I think I'll take a pass. Never could get used to those things for some reason.

Probably buy another slim to put away. The saw cut red bone really surprised me. That combination looks really good on this knife.

Will, the Northfields will always have the "pinched" and "lined" bolsters or embellished somehow, like flat/beveled & lined, where the Tidioutes will always have plain rounded bolsters. Of course there are exceptions to this, but that is the general rule.

The saw-cut looks great! Should be around 50 or so available through the usual suspects.

Thanks for the info buddy, it's appreciated.

Yeah, I know I'm a weirdo for not liking the pinched bolsters. Honestly I don't know why they make me wince. But I know myself and I know what I like. I've wholeheartedly adopted the single pen configuration as my favorite. The Tidioute purple sage slim I bought is a very impressive knife.

The california clip in the pen configuration make it a cross between my beloved old mini trapper and my white owl. I can't imagine a better design for me personally.... but I suppose figuring out that is the knife maker's job. :)

How are the pull's, walk n talk on the slim, both main and pen?

My latest haul just arrived...:D:thumbup:

Tidioute #47 Beaver Tail Trapper in jigged Brazilian cherry wood, Tidioute #92 Talon in Goldenrod jigged bone, and Northfield #22 Magnum in Sea Glass acrylic

Some of you may know that I'm a huge wharncliffe fan. Gotta say, the #92 Talon takes the cake in the GEC line-up, imo (then the #55 and the #47 finishes in 3rd place.)

Brett, I have a #55 and am interested in your opinion on why you prefer the #92?
