Lets talk GEC!

Got my #38 Special Abalone Rendezvous Special back from GEC yesterday. Quick shipping on this one. It's all fixed up, no handle bubbles I notice. It's reassuring to receive great service like this, I sure appreciate it.

Here is the knife stand my girlfriend got me loaded up:

Nice stand, Logan. Is the acorn shield knife in the middle a stainless #74 single blade? And what covers?

I don't think I've ever seen a 74 Trapper in tortoise shell acrylic, that looks awesome!

That's a 2016 Rendezvous knife, the stainless Mustang in primitive bone.

Did they patch it or replace the covers? Did you ever figure out if it was a natural flaw or mineral oil/WD40? Glad you got it back - looks great!

Just noticed the time range for the recent production schedule update:

"SCHEDULE APRIL 4th – SEPTEMBER 11th, 2018"

I'm glad they posted the production plans that far out. I'd also like them to have all the listed knives done next week because I'm anxious for a couple lol.

Super psyched for the up coming 15s, hope Charlie's is single blade long pull with end cap. Why not, I hope they all have end caps. My wallet is ready! :):D
I'm currently working with one of my senators to introduce a new amendment to the constitution banning traditionals with end caps. It's a hard battle to win, but oh what a worthy cause. :D:D:D:D

Oh, and crescent nicks on the #15 spears, MCar MCar

I pretty much ALWAYS prefer a crescent nick to a longpull. But there are at least two exceptions....#92 Eureka Jacks and...#15 spears. But, in the case of the #15s, I probably like the crescent nick as much as the longpull, so I'm happy either way. The only crescent nicked spear #15 I have is pinch-able, so that's a huge plus over its longpull sibling, even if it's not quite as attractive in my opinion. So there's a lot to love about the newly released production schedule. :)

My real burning question is....what nick will the #15s clips have! If they are cresent nicks, it may be the best news of 2018.:thumbsup:

Tell your senators and others, that there's MASSIVE international support for this noble enlightened move:D:D

We need Butt Cap Prohibition:cool:

Any thoughts on why GEC has not done a shadow pattern other than the Farm and Field? I think something like a shadow 92 talon would be neat to see - if it can get past all these newly proposed knife laws above

Yep, it was the 2016 Rendezvous Special. I believe it's pioneer bone, but I'll take a look.

Yeah, the tortoise shell acrylic improved trapper #74 was the 2015 Rendezvous Special.

I find it really really interesting and strange how little anyone posts Rendezvous knives.

Nice. Nail nicks are for functional for me.

They actually just sanded them. You wouldn't noticed unless you knew where to look, but if you look closely you can kind of see the areas they sanded. I'm happy with it.

Someone else said they said they've been having trouble with mineral oil, and they never told me another reason. It doesn't make that much sense to me as WD-40 is 25% mineral oil, but maybe that's low enough that it doesn't hurt. Or maybe the Mineral oil in WD-40 is pure and doesn't cause problems. Either way, although it is way less convenient or useful in my opinion, I'll be using WD-40 instead of mineral oil on acrylic knives. If not all.

I called Chris at GEC a couple of weeks ago and she told me there were some recent ‘issues’ with mineral oil and told me to use WD-40. I wonder if she was talking about your knife. She didn’t say what the issues were.

Regardless, I’ve been using mineral oil for at least 6 years on my knives and I’m not stopping now. I have quite a few acrylics stored with a coating of mineral oil. After a few wipe downs, they look mint still.

After I read your initial report, I ran to my chest and inspected all of my knives. I really don’t think mineral oil was the culprit. It’s very mild stuff. I would think WD-40 is much more harsh. The only downside I can see to mineral oil is that it’s messy. Doesn’t gunk up like most other lubes either.

I like that Tortoise Shell Sadddle Trapper! I had a chance to get one of those and I passed it up. What was I thinking?!

Just a guess, but I'm not sure how traditional shadow patterns that aren't Sodbuster are. The bolster was originally put there to give strength to the joint. I dont know that I've ever seen a wood shadow or a bone shadow, and Micarta/G10/Delrin are all less than 100 years old. @supratentorial or @waynorth have any ideas?

I see them from time to time, but there are so few of them made, and I'm willing to bet that there are a fair number of people who buy them who aren't BF members. I've wondered about that, actually - just how many knives are floating around it there from GEC, really special ones, that will never show up on the forum.

B B.F.U draggat draggat Wife uses a abalone 38 so good to know - thanks! If it develops any issues I think I will just sand it myself as it's a user. For what it's worth, I've covered it in mineral oil several times and haven't had any problems. This is her first pocket knife and still learning about not getting fruit juice (cutting apples) in the joint... it's had a lot of mineral oil on it for cleaning.
