Lets talk GEC!

Just a guess, but I'm not sure how traditional shadow patterns that aren't Sodbuster are. The bolster was originally put there to give strength to the joint. I dont know that I've ever seen a wood shadow or a bone shadow, and Micarta/G10/Delrin are all less than 100 years old. supratentorial supratentorial or @waynorth have any ideas?

I see them from time to time, but there are so few of them made, and I'm willing to bet that there are a fair number of people who buy them who aren't BF members. I've wondered about that, actually - just how many knives are floating around it there from GEC, really special ones, that will never show up on the forum.

Oh yes you have! The CSC bladeforums knife..

A 92 shadow in ebony might very loosely resemble something like this - I know not close, but it's what my 1 minute google search came up with..

The shield on your Canal Street knife looks.....different than everyone else's version (or am I crazy?).

I'd filibuster that vote. I have a 77 two-blade jack with an end cap and it looks just fine, thank you very much.
Okay, JTB_5, I'm a reasonable person...I, too, have a 77 2-blade with an end cap that I love dearly. I suppose there are some cases....hmmm...however FEW. ;)

And it's not so much that I hate end caps--I don't. It's just that every time I see one, I start squinting...and staring at the knife...squinting harder...until I realize what I'm actually doing! I'm trying to imagine what this very handsomely end-capped knife would look like as a bare-head! **Sigh**. I don't hate end caps, I just LOVE bare-heads. And the fact is, every end-capped traditional out there had the potential to be a bare-head at a moment in time. And that's really what makes me so sad. I just want to help every knife live up to its full potential and the only want we can make that happen is with bare-heads. I hope you see, I'm actually quite reasonable. :D

In all seriousness, though, what we really need is a run of #92 Eureka Jacks in Northfield trim that are BARE-HEAD. We've not had a run of those yet (except for the JBF Champlin, and while those had Northfield trim, they were not technically "Northfields"....and they are impossible to find).

Now...can we all get behind that at least?

I stand corrected. I forgot about the CSC. But still, I'll bet there is a reason we haven't seen more that has something to do with at least perceived pivot stability using bone or wood. Not sure what woods were available when slip joints were being produced before the 20th century, but there's a big variance in strength and durability across species.

Presently, the sodbuster is common and lots of people are familiar with it. Because of that familiarity, shadows sometimes get associated with sodbusters. But lots of patterns were made with or without bolsters. Some are more common than others.

Shadow versions of pen knives were pretty common (2nd from the top in the left column).

Here are some uncommon examples of shadow easy openers. I had these examples handy from a discussion about Mike's upcoming knife.

Well, I don’t know for sure about the Eureka Jacks, but there was the DLT run of barehead Talons some time back

First time posting a pic since the photobucket incident, so hopefully this works

Also, I have to respectfully disagree on the end caps. I love them! The more furniture on a knife, the better! But that’s why there’s so many different flavors to choose from!

Couple of contemporary Shadows, one in Horn from Italy and a small Lockback in Zebra wood from Queen Cutlery. Micarta offers a lot of opportunity for Shadow patterns, see young custom makers use of it and it's been used on European patterns a lot.

GEC's 38 pattern would make a great Shadow as a Penknife, Osage, Blackwood or Micarta. So too the 57 pattern or even the 18 and 13.

5BCF8483-B05E-4F21-B5BF-7B1078F5F041.jpeg Can someone say specifically what a shadow pattern is. I’m guessing one that doesn’t have bolsters but there is one right above the shadow in the catalog picture that doesn’t seem to have bolsters but is called corn.

Shadow does mean without bolsters at all. Corn knife may refer to a special type of blade, used for cutting corns on the feet....

I was checking out the Maher & Grosh version of the upcoming 15’s. I found this ad for the original. I’d be willing to bet this is what that SFO is going to look like. Not a very high quality picture but it looks like a nick and no end cap.

Glad they’re making a 2 blade version at least.

Some knives look fine with end caps - the #92 Eureka Jack looks best bareheaded in my opinion. Love mine in Ebony, but that JBF Champlin version is beautiful.
