Lets talk GEC!

The phrase "I can't wait" probably shouldn't be in the vocabulary of a GEC collector. :D

If you really can't wait there are always ways to get just about any knife you want, as long as you're willing to pay the price, but I think patience (sometimes a lot of patience) is a necessity when you're after a particular pattern/knife from GEC.

I really agree with everything you say...

I'm just a little anxious :-D

More than wait then...

Does anyone happen to know where GEC gets their scale materials from? For example, their tortoise shell blanks? I wouldn't think that is a trade secret but I am afraid to ask GEC :)

#81 is still easily available from the usual GEC distribution suspects... you might even be embarrassed by the number of versions still available to make your choice. This is a knife I love... a perfect edc.

The #66, there is still some but in less number...

#81's are readily available I see them all the time and wonder why. Did they overproduce them? They look like a great pattern and most of what are available are stag too.

I know some of their acrylics are Kirinite. No idea if all of them are.

I recently noticed this as well..I was suprised.

Ive been hording two #81 Moose in stag (when it looked like they were dwindling)..purchased after I received an appaloosa bone to carry and was very impressed w/ the factory effort on this pattern. (The softer pulls do not bother me..starting to prefer them, honestly)

As stated and noted by waverave ..just saw a boat load of stag 81 moose available...couldnt believe it..Is there a "total number produced" in that cover material available?..just out of curiosity.

312 stag 81s according to the recently posted 2017 GEC production totals.

The numbers on all the 81s from last year are pretty big by GEC standards. I suspect if they were stockmen and not mooses they would have sold a bit better, but, seriously, the numbers are big on this run.

When I first got into GEC (not that long ago, about late 2014, I believe) there were a lot of patterns readily available that are quite coveted now.

The 82 Dixie Stockman comes to mind, as I was too short-sighted to have picked one up. Lots of good stag was available on that pattern.

Probably important to remember that, while large for GEC, the overall production is still quite small, and when they are gone (into the hands of collectors and users) they are not going to be made again in that configuration. It's nice for the dealers to have some stock on hand to sell to new GEC enthusiasts as well.

My GEC purge is complete. I cut my collection of GECs from 30 knives ... down to 8 knives

I kept 5 users and 3 safe queens. Of course that number will grow again, and shrink again, and grow again. I just like to keep the numbers kind of low. I can only use or admire so many before they start losing their "special-ness". I completely understand the desire to have large collections, but that's just not me. I'd rather have a few meaningful pieces.

I'll be picking up two more GECs from the current #14 run but already have plans to put my old #14 in the "give-away" pile. I like my #14 a lot but I don't really care for spear point blades. I hope it will be an ever changing small collection of GEC knives. And in case you're interested, I kept my #76, #74, #72, #68, #66, #14, and two #15s.

How about a collection photo?

John, glad I could help you in this important endeavor :D. Got the 44 today and it's a beaut.

I’ve got one (mostly because I really wanted a GEC in Osage) but for me the blade combo doesn’t make much sense. I tried using the spear just for food and the clip for everything else but in the end I turned the spear into a wharncliffe. I guess the other reason it might not be a great seller is it’s size, a lot of folks want their traditional to disappear in pocket.

JohnDF JohnDF So funny, I have also recently engaged in a purge.

I freed up the cash to buy these two new GEC’s that I have wanted for some time ( as well as a Rick Menefee bent gunstock in Ironwood that I cannot wait to get in hand, plus a few vintage Case Pretty Bones.) I agree with you in that when my numbers get above 25 to 30 something happens, and I just feel the need to move some along. That’s why I try to stick to patterns that I know will sell quickly and easily for at least what I paid for them if not a little more.

Plus, my numbers are going to expand, and my wallet is going to contract, when all the 14's I have lined up start hitting my mail box!

I also would like to see a group photo of the ones you decided to keep.

Okay, here is a group shot of the knives that survived the Great Purge of 2018 :) Every one of these is special and a "favorite", with exception of the spear blade #14 and #15. I'll be replacing the #14 with the upcoming run and I'll keep an eye out for a clip #15. The interesting part of all this is that I can sit back and really tell which patterns I miss. Some patterns I don't even think about, but the #48 keeps nagging at me. I sold two of them and gave one away. I'll probably add another #48 at some point, but I'm not in a hurry.

My massive GEC collection :)

You can tell which ones sit in the safe, I gave them a soft cloth to sit on while they posed for the picture :)
