Lets talk GEC!

On a side note, I really like the acrylic covers and I am hoping GEC will bring back some more of older options.

Same here, would love to see them do some of the perylics again. Black gold, sea glass, and church glass perylic were some of the most gorgeous handle materials they've ever used.

Yes!!! I would love to see that too. Maybe if they could ease up on the micartas a tad :)
I know there are more...but these are all of them in the database that actually have the word "acrylic" or "perylic" in the material name as described by GEC. There are quite a few :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Darren, I have some additions for your acrylics list. These were all used on #53 Cubans in 2007-'08.
Notice the Northfield Dead Skunk was very much blacker than every other I've seen.

Jeff...are those all yours? Wow!!! When I compiled the database I noticed quite a bit of the earlier production info didn't include the word "acrylic" in the description of the material. A lot of them were just the name of the acrylic (like above). But with photos like this and further research I plan to identify them all accordingly. Thank you this is awesome :):thumbsup::thumbsup:
And oh man that Twilight and Sandbar acrylic looks so nice.

The #14 Dead Skunk didn't do much for me and I passed on the opportunity to get one. But those #53 Cuban acrylics of the Black Mamba's are at another level of awesome! Tomcat like! Tomcat want!

Darren, I can't remember where I got this but it may be useful to your. I think it came from Derrick Bohn (sp?) before he passed.

Perylic, acrylic and celluloid questions

Every now and then someone emails a question or tells me about a discussion on one of the boards about Great Eastern's Perylic handled knives. Most of the concerns I've heard have surrounded some of the concerns about the problems that have long been associated with some of the old celluloid handled knives. The Cellulloids had a well earned reputation of giving off gases that could interact with other materials as well as shrinking and warping.

I had a good chat with Pat at Great Eastern this morning and have a few answers to some of the concerns. Pat does a lot of research on different types of handle materials and is as knowledgeable about them as anyone I've talked to.

Are the Perylics the same as the Celluloid handles? NO. The Perylics are an acrylic acetate base which form a much harder material that does not contain the suspended gases that can leech off like the celluloid.

Will the Perylics scratch easily? The key word is 'easily'. In short no, BUT, like virtually any handle material, it can scratch and with time and usage will show surface scratches. If you carry your knife on a regular basis in a pocket full of change, keys, etc, in time it will pick up surface scratches. Will it easily dent or chip? No. If you whack it with a hammer, yes.

Can the scratches be buffed out? Yes. The Perylic is a very hard material that can be shaped, sanded and buffed relatively easily. Surface scratches could be cleaned up with a buffing wheel and different grits of buffing compound such as jeweler's rouged.

Wow, that Nighthawk is really something. That and Neptune Acrylic are my favorites. I wish GEC would do some Neptune!
Gotta agree with you there. I'm not much into acrylic as a rule, but there are some that are just too nice to ignore. Neptune tops my list as well. There was a mostly royal blue with thin yellow ribbons that I really like too, but I'm not sure the name of it, or expect to ever obtain one.
