Let's talk Northwoods

As I’ve said before I like the knives. I own a few. Including a really nice michigan jack, which I love but is not nearly as good a value as my other 77s. Just isn’t and that’s my opinion.

I was pleased to see that the knives were much more in line with comparable other offerings this time around. I didn’t pick one up but I might grab one on the secondary if I see it at a good deal. I’m not here to troll but I do appreciate a balanced conversation. Some can also appreciate that, others can’t. Whatever.

Warning for insults
And yet they haven’t because that’s not what we’re talking about. Whoever gave you your pretend badge needs to take it back and replace it with one that says “#1 fanboy”.

Hardly a fanboy, you own more Northwoods than I do.

This exact same discussion happens with every Northwoods release. The mods get tired of having to remove the posts and put them in GB&U.

Here is some of them....

Yeah and they are talking about pricing. We said value of a particular knife compared to Northwoods knives. This thread says "Northwoods." Any Northwoods Knives. Why are you trying to be a moderator. Let the moderators be moderators. There were previous posts on here yesterday that discussed exact pricing on Northwoods. I mentioned this before, you brought pricing on my comments. Not me. You never mentioned a word about the other posts about exact pricing. Now back to specific comments about Northwoods knives. Don't speak for moderators! They will chime in if need be. And if they did, they would have chimed to your pricing comment and the comments yesterday about specific life prices.

My opinion as well and thank you for keeping about the knives. I think we are staying the course my friend. I am anxious to see the clip on this recent run of Northwoods. And I must say, I love the nailbreakers on the Northwoods. So you are a fan boy because you own Northwoods??? Ha ha ha. OK.. Does that make sense to you?

The saber grinds make me feel a lot less bad about not scoring any of the last few releases.

Are the days of the FFG mirror polished Northwoods GECs behind us?
I feel ya, J_Curd. I really like the way these saber Northwoods look, but I always end up selling them, eventually. The polished flat grinds are the ones I end up keeping and using (Madisons, Eskys, Presidentials, ect.). I actually quite enjoy the flurry that surrounds Northwoods drops, even when I'm just a spectator. But, it's the flat grind Northwoods that really get me going.

Also, I think we'll see more flat grinds in the future ;).

I know they been talking about it for a while, but Bark River will eventually begin producing folders. And if I had to bet, slipjoints will make up a significant part of those. Convex grinds? Given the close relationship between BRKT and the owner of Northwoods, I think we'll see some BRKT-produced Northwoods. This is exciting because I would guess that we'll see quality construction AND different steels than we're accustomed to in Northwoods. When? Who knows, but Bark River has been buying machinery like crazy of late.

That would certainly be interesting. I suspect that KSF would like more quality players in the traditional field that they are comfortable carrying their product. I wonder if BRKT is expanding or just replacing equipment? If they begin making slip joints and the quality is consistent with their fixed blades, I think it will change the slippie playing field.

For the most part, I refuse to participate in these limited runs of Northwood knives that GEC makes for them. I will not sit and wait at my computer until the clock strikes 2:00 PM (or whatever) and then rush an order. I've done that. You all can play that game if you want to. But generally the Northwoods GEC made slippies are superb.

Thank you, KSF. Your improvements of purchasing has helped your consumers. I had to buy one at a time and was able to get three. I wouldn’t doubt that there’s some ‘fair play purchasing’ happening and those who where paying attention noticed.

As a member of the Porch, there’s some rehtoric and way too much inflammatory opinions being stated in this thread. We treat each other nicely out here, without underhanded comments, being sarcastic, or condescending remarks that are not well disguised as wit. Play nice and leave the garbage for other parts of the forum. One of the great aspects of the porch ,is we respect each other, don’t talk down to others, vendors, or use inappropriate speech for this sub forum.

I couldn't say it better. Keep it civil and about the knives and the thread will be within the guidelines and enjoyable for all.

Wow, HST - what a nice lot! Here's hoping the Saturday delivery gets bumped up while I'm at work...

And kudos to Derrick @ KSF for improving the purchasing process! I really enjoy buying knives from there, and hope that the Northwoods line stays strong and becomes increasingly more accessible (although the hustle/adrenaline is certainly part of the charm).

I don't follow BRKT as closely as others, buy I can confidently say they are expanding, not just replacing. They've spent A LOT of money on HAAS machinery. They are trying to produce more and more of their components in house (for fixed blades), but when people ask about folders, they respond that they are working towards it and that more machinery is coming. A BRKT slipjoint would be amazing. I love GEC. But 22-rimfire, I agree with you, the market is clearly demanding more high quality Slipjoints. The past 10 years has been really exciting for traditional slipjoints and Northwoods has absolutely been a part of that. I think the next 10 will be equally exciting.

Very unique mammoth, HST. I saw that one when they dropped and I was tempted, but resisted, hehe. One great thing about collecting mammoth is you can build a collection with such dramatically different colors/textures. I've shown non-knife collectors just a couple of mammoth knives whose covers vary dramatically and they can hardly believe it's ivory. That one you got is a great one.
