Let's talk Northwoods

While I agree that the exotic materials made Northwoods knives more appealing to me personally, I really like the new dyed micartas, especially if they allow for a larger run/lower prices. Derrick produces a great knife that shouldn't be exclusively for collectors (I have a camel bone and a giraffe bone Northwoods that I love to carry/use).

Oh man, some of the wood options from previous runs were gorgeous. View attachment 805547

That said, the micarta options are nice. I think I'll try to snag a black micarta to try and replace the black micarta Fremont that I got rid of a while back.
That is what I'm talking about. Beautiful covers. I remember those when they came out.

There is nothing wrong with having one or two micarta options. I'll probably get a black micarta Delta Jack too.

Northwoods should definitely include wood handle options. The slabs should be hand selected for beautiful grain patterns to help elevate the Northwoods from the less expensive GEC made knives. The rustic style blade is not enough to justify Northwoods knives. They need upscale, traditional handle choices also.

This is a most excellent point. I've avoided Northwoods largely due to me not wanting to engage in the buying frenzy but I also have found very few recent offerings in materials that pique my interest in any way. I find micarta immensely useful, but very unexciting.

I do like the rustic style blades, a lot actually. So if they were to have some premium select woods as cover options, I would have to be very hard pressed not to want to join you all in line.

I think with the recent offering of the Burlap Lincoln Jack sticking around for a little longer than usual, maybe it seemed that demand for Northwoods was going to take a breather. But, I guess not.
The Green Burlap appears to have been the hit of this run.

Or maybe people were more into this patter....?

I would be rather surprised if that were the case. The Lincoln Jack was built on a far more popular frame than the 35.

I am a big fan of the 35 frame. However, I am of the mindset that equal enders like the 35 do not lend themselves well to being single bladed jacks. That is, of course, simply my opinion and perception, so take that with as much salt as you dare.

I'm hoping what Derrick was shooting for with this run was to produce a large quantity of affordable knives, so there would be "a Northwood in every pocket" on Christmas morning.
I dropped my iPad I was laughing so hard at that one. Talk about creating demand; simply cut back supply and charge more for those 98 of each “category”. On Ebay Saturday night for $399 or higher:thumbsdown:

There were a few pictures a few pages back. Knivesshipfree's Instagram as well...

Right, went back a few pages.

They don't do anything for me as I consider Equal Enders to be properly a two blade frame, preferably as a Pen Knife. A Wharncliffe as a sabre ground seems to detract from the blade's slicing ability too.But somebody is thirsting to get one from the Exchange or Bay at a massive price, I assume.:D:D

I was able to land a couple....pictures, that is. :D
I'll post them below.

Their are three already up on the big auction site ranging from 160 to 395 in price.

I figured the green would be the hit, that’s why I went for the black. I just wanted to get one. I hope I like the pattern. This will be my first 35.
Fox, try a 35 Churchill, this pattern has really been doing it for me. And congrats on the score!

I wholeheartedly agree, Will. Equal Enders need at least 2 blades, one at either end.

I was just laughing to my self. There used to be a time when Derrick would post a nice little video introduction of each new Northwood's release. Hasn't needed to worry about that for a while now since they sell out in less than 10 minutes.
So true....remember when some modles--like Forest Jacks and Norfolks--would sit on the site for weeks...even months. Heck, I can remember that even that huge run of blue camel Fremont Jack's sat for about a week! And that wasn't so long ago!

I'll add my very uneducated agreement to both of you. The NW wharncliff is done attractively but there's too much handle and not enough sharp for me. It just looks unbalanced. Apparently, we're in the minority, though.

As was also stated elsewhere in the thread, this guy would have benefited from wood covers.

Bought my first Northwoods, a green camel Madison Barlow, just about two years ago. . . Took me at least two weeks of looking at it daily on KSF before I finally pulled the trigger. Man, those were the days!
