Life after Becker.......

These, in all probability, will sell like hot cakes and make Les boatloads of money.

What's not to like? Providing you're Les.

I think that honestly, whatever he does to make money is his business, not mine. I ain't gonna lose respect for someone making money doing something related to what they love, even if they are endorsing less than perfect products. Would those knives work if you were stranded on an island with no other tools? Probably.

Now if his show ends up being an over-commercialized piece of garbage, then I might take some umbrage with the man, but until then, he is still a decent guy, and one of the few that doesn't run all over looking like a meth'd up coke fiend.

The guy is just like any of the rest of us, he has kids to put through school, and bills he has to pay. Good for him for making a quick buck. He went the decent knife route with the Helle knife, I say let the man make a little money selling something that is less than awesome. Besides, as we saw with the Bear Grylls knives, some of them weren't utter crap, and I have actually heard good things about that ultimate survival knife once they got the pommel issues taken care of. Even Bladite can tell you how well the parang chops. So at the end of the day, I say cut the man a little slack and let him make his money. It isn't like it is going to hurt us at all, or take away from what we love and do.

I have nothing against people making money but when you endorse a certain way of life i.e. living off the grid, respecting nature and wildlife it's kind of ironic that Les endorses a knife that is made in China which is the largest polluter in the world.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah. I really intended this thread as being a little more light hearted. Just showing what your life would be like if you sold your Beckers and went hollywood. But hey, let the people speak. ;)

In all honesty, I almost bought a BG knife before I got my BK2. It was shiny. Had all kings of stuff with it that seemed cool. Then I read real world reviews and it just didn't hold up. Luckily, I am not much of an impulse buyer. Only sometimes.

But it is disheartening seeing a company that used to produce a quality US product, Becker knives for example, and now are selling gimmicky "survival star" blades that are made to move off the shelves and not necessarily hold up in use.

I am with Derek on this one.
Was Les a sellout for having a TV show? because that is pretty much the ultimate in commercialism.
I think hes a good guy trying to be smart and make some money off the short ride that he is on.
He definitely could have picked a better company to tie himself up with, but lets be realistic the people who will gobble these up will have them for a long time because they wont really get used.
Mall ninja tools make money just like real tools do, and my guess is that if they are total crap, he will make them fix it just like Gerber had to fix the major issues with the BG line.
I wish him all the best, but I will be sticking with my Beckers and my knives that aren't so gimmicky
Just my 2 cents, but yeah if it was me... I would have approached Ka-Bar, about doing this instead of the new Camillus.

Les, Les, Les. Not sure how closely you want to follow Bear but I like that big orc machete thingy. I hear the handle detaches for use as a urine mug.

I hear you and agree completely. I think Les can survive in lots of places on earth with even a crap cutting tool. Heck he could probably knap a couple rocks into sharp cutting tools if he needs to. But I wont be buying these even if he signs them. :p

Sadly, I have a lot of friends who will buy this stuff up, because Les' name is on it. I think he's a great teacher and I believe his show way more than Bear's, but I've gotta believe he didn't have much input on these knives, just signed his name to them. 440? Really?

While these knives look like crap, I agree that it probably doesn't matter how they perform since their market is clearly mall ninjas, and car campers(or even worse, trailer campers) and anyone who knows enough wouldn't use them in a real wilderness setting. I also have to admit that I picked up a BG ultimate knife(before I knew better), but now I have some respectable wilderness tools. And Derek is right, the man has a family to provide for, and who are we to say how he should do that. Either way if I was stranded in the wilderness and Les popped out from behind a tree I would politely ask him if he could get my butt outa there.

Gerber/Fiskars quietly markets their Grylls knives in a couple of other ways ... as zombie tools (brilliant and original), and just plain camping tools.

now, i actually respect the G/F lineup pretty much, they're making good tools, cheap, and that's all a lot of people want, esp for yard work. that parang is a well made tool; i hear Grylls had nothing to do with actual design there. G/F has a brushhook that is KICK ASS. love it. also a Woodsmans pal clone, that i haven't tried, but looks outstanding. axes? good axes. saw? very good saws. the BEST gear? no, but at a consumer, even pro-sumer level? yup. sold at many major chains too - so you can find it (Mart, Dicks, Target, Amazon, and far more).

now, Stroud apparently had major input on the Temagami, but doubt anything but his name is on the Camillus stuff. it's like being sponsored by Penzoil - ka-chow! i hope they actually USE the Temagami on the show.

if it's the RIGHT 440, it might even be heated treated somewhat well, and not suck entirely too much; again, customers don't want rusting knives. that's crap ;) consumer level? yup. will sell? we'll see... lots of idiots hurting themselves? of course.

I really want to find a review from someone that I trust on the Gerber Woodsmans pal clone, I LOVE the woodsmans pal and would really like one with a more ergo and grippy handle, but not gonna be the first guy to buy one ..lol and my biggest concern is is it full tang or thin short crappy tang like some of their other stuff.

What Camillus? It is just a name owned by Taylor Brands, right?
