Life after titanium framelock flippers

So the overbuilt knives are a joke, but they get made because they get bought. Most of those who have them probably know they are impractical, but hey, they might be fun or make someone happy.

Are most people on here "real operators" or pretending to be one? No, probably not. So most of us do not need to worry about "operator" criteria for what we buy. I am fairly certain I will not be doing any "operating", although I have dissected a lot of sheep organs this year in school.

Is a "real practitioner of blade craft" a maker of knives that are not large frame locks? Or a deadly knife fighting honest to goodness ninja guy?

Does brown and tan mean camo? Like hunting camo? And everyone buying those knives and beads and patches is fat with soft hands?

Marketing is a great thing

Yes some of us carry weapons for self defense

We work in situations where it is prudent to carry firearms and other tools

We live in a world where there is mass shooting, crack heads robbing etc.

We have children to defend etc

No not camo as in hunter .... I’m a hunter

I’m talking about the guys that buy tacticool stuff and never put a day in on the training etc

They dress up in their khaki gear and show up and swarm the over built folder guys and get blisters opening their knives and counting their patches

It’s all Good but I don’t take their advice on anything other than where to get a good hot dog at

At my brother's wedding we were wearing tuxedos.
We both had folders clipped in the pants, and we looked good.

He had a ZT 0551 clipped in his pocket, and it saved the day by being able to cut the loose thread that was hanging from one of the bridesmaid's dresses.
She was all sad about the thread, and it was becoming a "major dilemma"...until one of the women asked if anyone had anything like scissors or a knife to cut away the thread.
Zero Tolerance to the rescue!!! :D

I had the Spyderco Kris with me, as it fits the lines of a Tux or suit even better.

Only you Stab and I’m sure you looked good doing it.

I’m also sure your hell on wheels with those lobsters :)

Yeah, I get all that. I have kids, I hunt some, I have a firearm for home defense, etc. And no one ever said it is not prudent for you or others to carry firearms and smart knife choices.

Just seemed like the derision was getting thrown around pretty liberally. Maybe not though.

Not meant to be

My comments all came is response to so,done saying that carrying a knife with a pocket clip in your front pocket was less obvious than carrying a small fixed blade ......and that simple is not true when done correctly

Ask any cop what is the biggest tell someone is carrying a knife ....the answer will be a pocket clip or a pair of pants that are worn where a clip would normally be

I’m not guessing this is a fact

Than I really didn’t mean to get in to my disdain for the over built frame locks but since it is a thread about them I thought I’d speak my mine

As you can tell I’m not a big fan

Diskin?

I would definitely like to see more knives without flippers. Thumbstuds are probably my favorite alternative as long as they stay out of the cutting path and make opening the blade fairly easy. Spyderco with their blade hole opening method is very nice as well. I'm also starting to get more into knives with locks other than frame/liner lock, like Benchmade's axis lock and Sypderco's compression lock. I feel lucky to have gotten more into knives these last few years with all the options there are. :)

To me when you say "when done correctly" you are saying deliberately trying to conceal your weapon. The same can be done with a small flipper or other folder. You are good at drawing scenarios that suit your views.

But I don't have to conceal a folder with a clip when it's legal to carry that way.

My knife is openly carried on my belt I don’t understand what you are saying

Fixed blade or folder it’s in the same spot

If you look you can see Both even with a suit on

So no I am not concealing it

It just disappears on my center line and goes unnoticed

Some of up don’t like hanging a knife on our pocket ....certainly not an over built large frame lock folder

Showing up to a meeting like that in a suit would make me look rather stupid

I’m sorry I don’t like pocket clips

For me they wreck pants get caught on stuff and just don’t work for me

If I get a knife that has one it’s fine I can use it for IWB in a pinch but I send the knife out for Leather or some type of scabbard

To each his own

It's illegal where I live to carry a knife concealed, so I need to carry inconspicuously as possible without being concealed.

Dan try a small fixed blade worn horizontal on your belt in front of your left hip

It will not really be concealed unless you untuck your shirt

I think you will be amazed at how many people don’t even mention it

Here is a custom Navaja from Spain in a horizontal or vertical leather sheath

Notice no pocket clip or frame lock :)

Works great

I really like that! I need to get a horizontal sheath made. All of my fixed blades have vertical sheaths.:(

l like almost all knives, and titanium framelock flippers are not all ''overbuilt''.
I have concealed carried for 40 years, when the need presents itself.
I wish I could recall how many times I have busted "operators" for printing or worse.
You would have been relieved of that scandium alloy quickly anywhere I ever worked.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled pissing contest.

I tried wearing my Street Beat horizontal in the front, but it printed badly. I'm sure a custom sheath would carry better, but with the stock one it looked like I was just happy to see everybody.

I'm just glad I live in AZ where nobody cares about pocket clips or what's on your belt.

I know that a lot of members here are tired of the Titanium framelock flipper fad and for me, living in Canada with the current import restrictions flippers of any kind are not going to be available.

So, if you're tired of the TFF fad, what would you like to see instead? Thumb studded, pocket clipped slipjoints? Locking friction folders? Some kind of cool new mechanisms?

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing more manufacturers making small (yet practical) EDC fixed blades. Maybe with some kind of pocket clipped sheath!

Generally speaking, I'd love to see more out of the box locking mechanisms/less frequently used locking mechanisms so +1 to things like button locks and the ti-lock. As well, I'd love to see more modern takes on classic knives à la the Benchmade Proper.

I respect that but sadly most security isn’t that good and I’m not about to sit in a large public place with my kids twittling my thumbs if some weirdo with bad intentbcan walk right in armed also

Amen and I live in a state that is good also

Kydex is rough to blend in it’s hard and does not conform to your body

Never been a fan of liner locks or frame locks. That said, my favorite knife is the Spyderco Military which is a liner lock so obviously that is only part of the equation. I own a few flippers too. I do not prefer either but if the overall design speaks to me then I am still interested.

I am a Spydiehole fan and have never warmed up to flippers. I guess that is the Spyderco fanboy in me. I just stick with what I am used to for the most part. I have been in the game long enough to know what I like.

Basically it is a different strokes for different folks scenario. The current knife market is flooded with options so luckily we can for the most part all get what we want. Complaining that every knife isn't the way I would want it when I don't need and cannot afford every knife is a waste of energy. There are still more knives that I want/like than I need or can afford.

I must admit that the market is flooded with ti framelocks. It would be nice to see the offerings more balanced.

Knives as fidget toys is quite popular. To each their own but that isn't my thing. I think that is a big part of the popularity of ti framelock flippers.

What would like to see more of? Well executed backlocks. :)
