Links to my YouTube knife reviews (updated January 31, 2015)

Today we have a closer look at a well-made French companion knife: l' Arconsat by Laforet. It's a neo-regional knife where the cutlers hope to establish their recent knife design as the knife associated with their village (Arconsat in this case). This knife is particularly elegant, a nice alternative to the better known laguioles for example.

CRKT regularly turns promising custom designs into affordable production pieces with decent midrange component quality. Here we have a look at one of their most elegant 2009 knives, the Summa which was designed by young knife maker Gerry McGinnis.

A happy and sharp 2010 wished !

Thanks for posting all these great reviews. I really appreciate the bon vivant perspective you take. I was wondering if you could tell me whether the back locking laguioles you own can be flicked open. I live in New York City where it is illegal to carry a knife that can be flicked open one handed into a locking position. While I really think they would make a great picnic knife I want to make sure that they'd be legal.

p.s. Also, why'd you stop doing book reviews?

Thanks for the feedback, yes indeed I wanted to offer a kind of alternative to the overly tactical fetish of so many of these review clips - exactly the usage that doesn't interest me!
My Fontenille-Pataud backlocking laguiole can't be opened with one-hand. They actually produce one-hand versions with a small hole in the blade, but I feel that these lack charm.

p.s. Also, why'd you stop doing book reviews?

I will pick that up again. I barely need to prepare the knife videos but for the book reviews I find that I need to prepare a bit what I will be saying, which snippet to read aloud etc. But they'll come back, for sure, as I my knife video releases will slow down after clip 85 or so - then I'm through my collection and my buying has decreased the last few months.

I believe I have posted here before but I would like to say again that you have, without question, the best and most intriguing knife reviews on YouTube. Your sense of aesthetics are what is missing from most other reviews. There are others (notably two) that are very good but your's Dagon are my favorites by far. Happy New Year and I hope to see more of your work in 2010.

Bravo Dagon, best reviews on the 'tube! That Schleiper is really beautiful.

Very nice reviews. It is refreshing to see and hear honest and unbiased reviews, unlike "some" of the printed reviews in certain magazines.

thanks for the education!!!!

Thanks guys!

I was pretty busy lately, only yesterday I got around making three new clips:

Ken Onion's first knife design for CRKT is impressive. We find the typical fluid lines of his designs, and this one is particularly futuristic looking. A closer inspection is in order!

The venerable French brand Opinel is mainly popular for their affordable and functional folders. From time to time they also offer limited versions with special handle materials and usually with polished blades as well. Here we have a look at two limited editions: the "Old School", and one in ebony.
FYI My other video on Opinels shows more different models and gives more background history.

During 2009, Boker offered every month a special edition knife (except the first one they were limited to 140 pieces) to celebrate their anniversary. This is the november one: a perfectly finished high-tech tactical/utility folder.

Most gentlemen knives have classic looks, but there are some that cater for more high tech tastes. Here we have a look at two capable yet affordable compact knives: the Boker Plus Exskelibur 2 (in fact the production version of the Burger EXK1) and the Buck Nobleman. Both are good choices for everyone who likes modern looking compact knives, and watch the video to find out which one I prefer!

G Sakai is a Japanese company from Seki city that is known to make (or have made) some Spyderco models. In short: they offer great quality. Here is one of their own designs, the peculiar looking yet slender and elegant folder TA103 folder. We will also have a look at the incredibly affordable Rough Rider RR078 which looks quite similar to the bigger G Sakai.

Today a look at probably the most beautiful knife in my collection: the Mini Explorer was made by Belgian custom knife maker Filip De Coene, based on a drawing by Antoine Van Loocke, whose knife designs get attention in the art world. The original bigger Explorer is on display in a design museum, and this is the more EDC-able variant. We also go into the background of this knife.

Superb reviews as always, Dagon.

I really love the Arrow 2 by Filip De Coene. His minimalist, austere, smooth designs really speak to me. I plan on contacting him in the future. If I ever get a custom knife, I'm sure it'll be from Coene.

Thanks for the reviews.
