Living nightmare.

"Knives are meant to be used"

That may well be true, depending on the point of view of the owner. And while many of my knives are "users", that doesn't mean it's ok for other people to "use" them any way they want. I have no problem sharpening a knife that's dull from MY usage, but I don't want to have to sharpen it because someone else "used" it without my permission. And I certainly don't want my blades tip broken, or the edge chipped, because someone "used" it without my permission.

My knives are meant to be used BY ME. They aren't meant to be used by other people. ;)

As far as not leaving a knife out in the open, we can try not to, but humans are fallible. Your at a friends/family members house, you pull your knife out of your pocket and put in on a coffee/end table to be more comfortable, you get up and go to the bathroom and forget it, or choose to leave it because you think it's safe.

Or, your using your knife, put it down and turn away for a moment, and someone picks it up without asking and starts "using" it.

I really , really mean no offense but you need to learn how to sharpen your knives!,,, it's like owning a car and not knowing how to put gas in it!!!,,, or a gun and not knowing how to load it !!!!

"Living Nightmares":
1) Homeless, living on the street, with a wife and children.

2) Spending decades behind bars for a crime you did not do. ( or worse, being executed for a crime you did not do.)

3) Being an active participant in any war zone.

4) Politicians of both major parties (USA)

5) Lost at sea - in a sinking boat.

There are, of course, more, but I'll stop now.

This.

I'm thinking the father grew up using knives like knives were meant to be used. A rough and tough ZT damaged by some coax cable?

Yeah, another one is being involved in a thread discussion at BladeForums regarding "Wich Nife Steal is Bset?"

ZT will replace the blade for $10 (you would have to send it in). But that's one option.

Replace the blade?!

Oh for cryin' out loud. It's just a knife. OP - Sharpen the sucker and throw it back in your pocket. They look better with character.

I'd rather see a beat up, scratched, well used, loved old beater than a fondled once in a blue moon, safe queen piece of photogenic man jewelry.

Just my opinion of course. ;)

Grab him by the collar and tell him "don't ever touch my knives again or you'll a granddaddy in less than a year"

heh heh....

The first thing most people do when they see a fancy knife is try to destroy it. Sometimes because that's what Hollywood makes it seem like fancy knives are made to do, and the rest of the time because no-one knows what a knife is.

I have a problem with people that just pick up someone else's property without asking and do whatever they please with it. It's rude and shows an extreme amount of ignorance IMO. I won't even show a knife to most people, because I've had them drop them on concrete, open them and not know how to use the lock, then they grab the blade and try to force it closed by sheer force, rather than to ask me how the lock works. They mostly don't give a crap about the knife anyway and can't see why it's made better than something costing 10 bucks. Try to tell them the difference and they just stare at you blankly like yeah right, whatever.

Just for the sake of discussion, I'll offer a different point of view :).

In my opinion, we each decide for ourselves how we value our possessions. And since they're ours, and we paid for them, we can never be wrong.

Imagine if someone sat on your bike in a parking lot without your permission, just to see what it felt like to sit on a motorcycle, and they dropped the bike. Imagine a dented gas tank, dented pipes, and scratched chrome. Would you say "That's cool, it gives the bike character"? Or would you be pissed, even though the damage was only cosmetic?

I guess I'm the only one that thinks maybe shouldn't leave nice knives laying around?

Either way, it ain't bad. Sharpen it up, and put it in your pocket. I would say back in your pocket but being there initially and we wouldn't have this discussion.

I'd be pretty irritated as well. However...

It would have been smart to use it as a teaching opportunity and tell him about your knives. Impart some knowledge about fine cutlery and maybe gain some mutual respect. Granted, I don't know the guy so maybe he wouldn't give two ****s about your knives, but it's worth a shot. Especially if you plan on being family some day.

Also, I think this is a opportunity to start looking into a good sharpening kit. If you can't sharpen them then what will you do when they inevitably get dull? They may be expensive, but they're tools nonetheless. They're meant to be used and, in my opinion, you should be able to properly maintain them.

Use his car to pull out a tree stump.

If we were in a different forum, I'd give different advice!

Totally the same thing. Totally.

The guy used his knife and he titled the thread "a living nightmare". That, it ain't. He's 23. I'm sure he'll have plenty of things piss him off and disappoint him in his life. I'd rather not shine him on and give him the impression that this is so horrible, because it's not.

I'd be more worried about the COAX cable damaging my blade! Are you sure it's a real ZT?

If you consider your $200 knife actually being used a "nightmare," then youve had a pretty cush life and are in a rude awakening.
