Locking UK Penknife ?

Hi Carlos,

Does the model need a new name?

I don't know ;) Does anyone think it needs a new name?

We've been referring to "it" as the Caly 3. Thought it might be less confusing than to add another name to a "similar" pattern (Calypso jr, UKPK, newname).

The UKPK was named by the Brits on the BB forum. Nutty name, if you ask me :p , but we made it for them, so they named it.

A "hybrid" between the Caly jr & UKPK would be a what? 3rd generation Caly seemed logical.....but I'm always open to opinion.

My guess is that they wanted "penknife" to make the knife seem as tame/unobtrusive as possible--in name just as in the way it rides.

Caly III sounds good to me. Sort of like the Native III. Calypso III suggests the new design without forgetting its micarta grandaddy.

Sal , is there any reason why your zdp blade are only 64rc and not 67 like the William Henrys? I have both knives anf the 67 rc holds much better and have not noticed any chips.

Hi Sal,

Maybe. I've been calling it Caly III as well. But if you are thinking of taking it back into possible regular production in VG-10 and FRN, and not just some sprints then maybe.

I've always wondered if the name Calypso hurt sales. It always made me think of something aquatic - but then I usually overthink things. I always wondered, "Why did they call this Calypso?"

It could be a non-issue. Collectors would probably prefer Caly III to maintain the connection, dealers and regular ELU perhaps something different?

I like the name Caly III, it sounds progressive.

Hey Sal, any decisions on scale material, and or FRN color? I know the "suggestions" thread is still running on my other "home".

Hey Sal, thanks for keeping the options open for more usage of ZDP-189. I tried to get a ZDP Calypso Jr. but the customs people snagged it. The only way I’m going to get my hands on any ZDP-189 is if it’s on a knife with an adjustable pivot, and it looks like the Caly 3 is it.

That was part of it, but the other part was a bit of an in-joke. To the average punter in the UK, any and all folding knives are generally called "penknives", be they Buck 110's or Leatherman Micra's.

Hi Danny,

I've not heard of Hitachi recommending Rc67. I also never tested one at Rc67, so I have no history. WM knives should be the same steel as the Caly.

I'll have to look into it.

Hey Josh,

sorry, the Caly 3 isn't scheduled for an adjustable pivot. I'll look into that possibility.

I would just like to say that I think it is great the locking UKPK/Caly III is getting the go-ahead. I think this will be a very good edc. I prefer VG10 over 30v so that sound good to. It being made is Seki will probably geep the price to a afortable level too.

Please don't change the nice UKPK low ride clip to a high ride.
Ditto Sal, the clip in one of the most attractive parts of this design. Please keep it!

I don't care what you call the locking ukpk, but I have never understood why the calypsos were called calypsos. Does anyone know?

It was more for the boat than the music. A group got together and came up with the name. It obviously wasn't a great name.

Caly seems to be more acceptable. Just a sound with no real meaning. Yet, still connecterd in a remote way to its heritage.

I always wondered why there wasn't a Spyderco Reggae or Ska knife.

PLEASE let the Caly 3 have an adjustable pivot!!! If for no other reason than I could actually get one through Canadian Customs!

I also just prefer them in my pocket knives.
