As far as being a "scam" I guess if you think that Gerber and Bear Grylls are somewhat intentionally misleading consumers concerning the capabilities and quality of the knife, then "scam" could be an appropriate word. I don't think I am ready to use that term. I have not used the Gerber/Grylls knife, only held one in my hand. A client and I got to talking, and said he bought one for his son (I am pretty sure the son is in his 20's, if it matters) and had it in his truck. He brought it into my vet clinic at my request, still in the plastic. After looking at it, I showed him my ESEE-4DT I had in my office. Interesting reaction on his part. He pulled out his own folder, cut open the Gerber packaging, and held it next to my 4. In less than 10 seconds he asked me where I got the 4, stuck the Gerber back in the packaging, and gave me a sincere thank you for showing him my knife. I can not tell you with certainty, but based upon his reaction and my relationship with him (first name basis, professional) I expect him to return the Gerber and order an ESEE for his son. My initial impression of the Gerber was disappointment. To be fair, I have 3 other Gerbers, 2 folders that are EDC and have been pleased with, and an LMF II that I feel is somewhat lacking, but definitely better than the Grylls knife(which, granted, I only held in my hand for about 10 seconds.) This is just my impression and opinion, take it for what it is worth. Probably nothing!
