Looking at options

If the right deal comes along, who knows..

I wish I could just buy about a dozen and be done (for a month or so). :p

I've got a Battle Grade Park Ranger coming my way I want to compare it to my HRLM. The HRLM has been a good Elk Skinner for me and this new PR might be as good:D

It looks like it will be! I'd like to get my hands on one of those eventually, too. But I also went and looked at the HRLM and I really liked the way the ergos of the handle looks. Looks like a comfortable knife.

Once these land, I would like to see a lineup of the EDC sized Busse's.
Vex, mini vex, MSE, AMS, MS versions, AD lineup, et al...

I am sure someone has them, but knowing y luck, they won't see this post.

I did take a look. Not sure if I'm a fan of skeleton knives, I like scales. Not to say I couldn't get a set put on any knife I want, but for my very first Busse I don't think I want to put it together. I'll already have to get a sheath (more than likely). I'm really planning on putting this thing to the test. From the woods, to the lake, to the shop, and into the warehouse. There are all kinds of uses. I don't think it's as much indecisiveness as it is price/availability, I am definitely searching for a decent deal. If I did have to move away from the GW, which I really don't want to, I think the closest as far as dimensions and aesthetics is the R3. Correct me if I'm wrong (I may have missed one or two I'd really like, and don't even know it).

Understandable. But I love the 'kin skelly blades! So thin and lightweight they disappear and are perfect for a backup blade in vehicles, hunting packs, etc.

Might check out the recent Mini Vex. I'm not 100% on the dimensions without looking, but it should be pretty close to the GW in size.

They are good to put in the glove box or backpack! I keep an SAK among other things in my EDC bag as a "backup" if necessary.

I saw the mini vex at one point while researching blades in my size range. I like the asthetics. I like that it's "straight forward" looking, to my eye. Blade length stated at 3.6" though, and I'm just afraid it's a bit longer than I'd like. I love the size range, but anything 3.5" and above tends to stick out below my shirt on any normal day. I use that size blade for skinning, and in the field (in combination with others).

Yeah, you're right, ~3.6":

Overall Length: 7.65"
Blade Length: 3.65"
Blade Width: 1.25"
Thickness: Approx. .150"

Tad bigger than you're looking for.

It might not be too bad for winter or colder weather carry, though. The OAL being under 8" I think it would hide nicely under a sweater and/or jacket.

Now the voice on the other side of the couch is trying to convince me the Active Duty won't be too large.. She's killin me, man!

I'm torn. I understand the chances I'll score any GW, let alone the one I want, are extremely slim and will likely take an absurd amount of time and sweet talking someone :p

Does the AD come in any kind of coated INFI..? ....sigh o_O:oops:

Don't think the wait will be as bad as you think, as the exchange has been moving at a pretty good clip lately. Give it a week or two (NOT "two weeks..." ;)).

ETA - AD comes in all kinds of coated INFI, uncoated Elmax stainless steel, and SR-101 in Battle Grade dress as well. Check my earlier post (with pic) on the AD.

Got it. I'll give it a "little" time (as long as I can stand it :D). But I think a coated INFI AD would do the trick for me as well. If I could sweet talk someone out of one of those, I'd be a happy camper

Same as the GW, just have to watch the exchange and/or put out a WTB. If I had as many as some of the Hogs, I'd sell you one. But I've posted pics of all the Wardens / ADs I still own in this here thread, and those aren't going anywhere, sorry. ;)

ETA (again, sorry...) - I'd bet if you did some searching in some recent threads, you'd find some Battle Grade SR-101 AD's still up for sale in the exchange. HTH!

I'll wait a day or three and see if an INFI comes out of the woodworks :) If not, my destiny will become SR101

When you are on a Grail Quest you need to look at the options that pop up or suggestions Not be Blinded by INFI...I searched 4 years for one never gave up hope, but along the journey I got to hold and try some great Blades!!!

Why don't you Put a WTB in your Signature Line someone out side this thread might have what you're looking for. Happy Hunting

Definitely solid advice. I wouldn't say that I'm "blinded" by INFI, per se. I would just really like to try it, experience it, put it to the test in my real world everyday situations.

I put up a WTB over in the exchange. Did not even think about my signature line. Thanks!:thumbsup:

- What alloys are you accustomed to using?
- What is the most exotic alloy you have used for an extended period of time?
(Maxamet, S110V, CPM D2, 4V?)
- What will you be comparing INFI to?
- Do you require the toughness, or would edge holding in abrasive materials be a better fit for your uses?

I do warehouse work for 1/3 of my day, and wear resistance is a better fit for my jobs requirements. Due to this, I was able to look past INFI for my smaller blades, since I don't worry about hitting a pallet rack, or banging the blade off of the forks on a lift.

Until my PR lands, I EDC a Carothers Performance Knives (CPK) EDC in 4V, since the added wear resistance is a boon, and I don't mind the fact that it can stain/patina.

It is fairly slow to stain, and with the location I live in, I put it to the test just by owning it. With tidal salt water within 5 blocks on 3 sides of me, the humidity and salinity in the air can be a harsh mix, and 4V just takes it in stride.

All Solid points right there and CPK are quality knives. I think for most people if you lay down 2 satin finished blades with no material markings on them could not pick out which is 4V or INFI or SR-101. They are a Tool to be used (ok and collected as well) but the true test is how it holds up to it's daily tasks and all 3 of the above noted steels will meet or exceed expectations short of cutting nails in half in an EDC size blade. When they start to stain use mild abrasive like comet cleaner with a sponge or scotchbrite to bring them back to satin.

I am quite used to using "higher end" steel. I don't mind the sharpening process, and usually sit down to sharpen/touch up blades every night or two anyway (as a lot of us do :D). That said, all of the "super steel" I have used has been stainless, with the exception of M4 (which I had a terrible time keeping stain/rust free).

I did not grow up in the carbon steel era, so to my eye I prefer a blade without patina. I like to be able to sit down and wipe the crap of the day off, and see her look as good as the day I got her (minus the usual EDC scratches and nicks all tools get). Mixing that entirely personal preference with the fact that I've really heard great things about the toughness of INFI, is what makes me prefer it quite a bit over SR101. Trivial, I know (aesthetically). But, we all like things the way we like them. I believe SR101, D2 (which I have also used extensively), 1095, O1 (have used, but was gentle because I didn't want to stain it), or 5160 (used lightly, patina seemed to seek out this steel) would all be very functional and I would probably never know the difference performance wise. That is the reason I stated I would certainly consider a coated SR101, that would help tremendously with patina/corrosion.

So which GW did you want?

I have a Boney AD in Tan with Tan Canvas and a regular ADs in Black with Black & Tan G10 and Sae with Black Canvas. I'm sure there have been others.

I'd really like a coated, thin stock INFI GW. Color variations aren't that important as long as it is not yellow or orange! :D:p

Question on the coating- is the black a "thicker" coating, or does it just look that way in pictures? I've seen a lot of Busse coatings, and the black always seemed rougher or thicker than the others.

As far as the AD goes, same configuration as the GW, it just serves as a backup choice should the GW prove unattainable (or way too expensive if one does come up).
