Looking for a good Bowie

Love the replies! I just got my NL1 Tor on Friday. I'm in New Orleans for the long weekend but when I come back I'll do a review of it.

Thanks for the info on the Randall's, I'd want it to be a fighting knife. Just wondering if it would be too big for my flight kit.. does fit my personality to be the one guy with the big knife on his kit though Lol

Aesthetically speaking, I consider the Randall 1-8 to be a perfectly designed fighting knife. But for looks as well as performance, I really like the Burt Foster style(not really sure who did it first), modern art Bowies made to be used. Congrats on the Fallkniven...

GB940, We all have our preferences, however, an axe is generally left semi-dull/or blunt deliberately, a knife, no. I agree that an edge can be too sharp (thin), but I'll lean towards sharp from the maker anytime. ;)

I'd rather have the edge thin.
Sharpness can be fixed, a thick edge can't, or not easily at least.
Thick edges have wasted more of my knife money than anything I can think of.

For chopping, a knife works by edge finesse, unlike an axe which shoves wood sideways. To help the knife shove wood sideways, a very low sabre hollow grind (still with a very thin 0.020" edge) will somewhat "imitate" the sideway shoving of an axe, which is why I tend to have a preference for low sabre hollow grinds in big chopping knives.... The problem with low sabre hollow grinds is the knife is a lot heavier, so a Full Flat Grind makes more sense carry wise. Really big thin edged Full Flat Grinds also have a terrible tendency to "stick" into wood when it rains: Only turning the whole thing and tapping the opposite side can free them when the knife "rain sticks"... G.

The Burt Fosters are great. One of my favorites so far.

Congrats Jack88 the Tor is a thick one and as that leather handle gets darker it looks even better imo.

Congrats on the purchase!
Bet you can't stop at one :D

As one of the old guys here...
In my experience...In the pre internet days and before...
Most knives came with a semi sharp edge like the above mentioned Randall.
The owners were expected to put "their own" edge on the tool. This was especially true with folders back then...
The notable exception back then were the Rapala fillet knives (and, I guess, other scandi's as well). I remember more friends cutting themselves with a Rapala fillet knife and their consensus was that those knives were "too sharp".
I'm sure there were a few others as well.

The knife world and changed when Cold Steel and Black Jack came along. The phrase OOB sharp was born.
So now there is a different set of possible problems, such as getting a knife with a brittle or 'burnt' edge from it being belt sharpened after heat treat.
Or getting a knife with a big wire edge.

Times change. Perceptions change...
:)

Thanks for the info! Nope, not going to be able to stop at one. Like my guns, now I have to have a knife for every use...

When I get back home I think I'll be starting a new thread about folders, done quite a bit of research but I love hearing opinions. I've learned a lot from this thread, very knowledgeable community! Will be replacing my little beat up CRKT on my flight suit next..

How does the bk29 feel in terms of quickness and point of balance compared to the bk9?

I find the BK9 slow and heavy, balanced biased afore. Not gonna complain, it's very sharp, and first and foremostly is a utility blade.

I've been drooling over the awesome bowies in this thread for several days, so this afternoon I finally pulled the trigger on a CS Trailmaster in O-1.

Curious as to what you are comparing the bk9 to when you say it's slow & heavy?
