Looking for a good Bowie

Good choice for a using knife, I think you'll like it...
I've wanted one for many years, since they were made of Carbon-V, but the funds were never there.

This morning, I was informed I'll be getting a $7000+ per year raise. So I decided to indulge myself a little.

Curious as to what you are comparing the bk9 to when you say it's slow & heavy?

I've a cheap ~8" elk ridge bowie, weighs under a pound, ER-038. Feels faster in hand. Point of balance closer to the guard. But obviously not a camp knife, more a wall hanger, I wouldn't stretch and call it a fighter. A similar knife would be the mtech I just mentioned. The 096. Thin blade. A lot of cheap bowies are atrociously heavy, as you know. Thick blades. Maybe to make up for the crappy steel that's usually there.

Here are my first impressions! Full review to follow. I opened up the box minutes before leaving it to go on a 4 day vacation, couldn't wait the entire time to get back and get a better feel for it.

The first thing I thought handling this beauty was "Wow this is light"

My roommate said the same exact thing, "Lighter than expected"

This is hands down the sharpest knife I've ever felt out of the box. It is razor sharp..

Can say I'm already not impressed with the sheath, while it seems to be an upgrade from the previous brown version it still falls short of what I want out of a sheath.

Full review to come tomorrow, I'll put it to work a bit in the afternoon. The question is should I do it here or start a new thread?

I think you should do it here. I'll read it regardless.

The only reason I suggest doing a separate thread would be for anyone looking for reviews of the Tor it would come up easier in a Google search. I can say I hard a difficult time finding a decent review of the knife.

I'd do like you mentioned Jack88 and list it in the review section. I've got the old brown sheath with my user Thor and I really prefer kydex for it's toughness over leather but it'll probably scratch the blade more. Yes they are sharp convexed edges huh, like a big razor. Have fun with it and be safe those big blades can get away from you sometimes and keep on going being that sharp.

How does the bk29 feel in terms of quickness and point of balance compared to the bk9?

I find the BK9 slow and heavy, balanced biased afore. Not gonna complain, it's very sharp, and first and foremostly is a utility blade.
Slower and heavier, looks like it was designed to baton right at the clip where the blade is thickest

Looks like the King of all Blades!

Solid looking knife for the price, have you put it through the ringer much? How is the handle? Very hesitant of synthetic handles, never been a fan.
For $50, an indestructible American made bowie. I've done things with this knife no fool should ever do to a knife and it asked for more. It's a bit of a project to change the handle to stacked leather but I've seen pictures of it being done.

While flying with an instructor the other a day (a USMC Major) we were discussing knives (waiting for approach to get back to us... as usual) after telling him about some of the cool foreign knives I have he asked "why the hell don't you have a Bowie knife, you're an American" after realizing I couldn't argue with the logic I began looking at Bowies...

Top of my list is the Fallkniven NL1/NL2: beast of a blade but I sometimes see negative reviews on the VG10 saying it will chip out in the woods... their A1 Pro blade while less pleasing to the eye is in the running as well with its cobalt steel. Have to say I love the leather handles in the northern light series.

Next down in the Dustar model 1, Israeli made and haven't seen anything but positive reviews.

Coldsteel trailmaster: can't say I like coldsteel... something about the company just bothers me. I bought an axe of theirs and it wasn't very well made... but it seems many swear by them

SOG super bowie: looks impressive, seems a bit smaller than the others however.

Anyone have any experience with these blades/ other suggestions? Something Damascus would be awesome as well just it seems most of the Damascus I see I wouldn't trust..

Thanks a ton
I've heard a lot of criticism about Bear & Son, but I have 2 of their "Gold Rush" bowies in 9" 12c27 steel, cocobolo handles and made in Alabama. Each knife has a different thickness, but each of them work the way that steel is supposed to work in a large blade e.g. Bends before breaking, stainless, easy to sharpen. I paid less than $80, their Damascus bowie cost a little more but only have good reviews, also available in 7" size

You mentioned the SOG Super Bowie , i have one, unless you have overly large hands i would avoid it. I bought mine online, never got to paw it first, the handle is waaaay too big, much much bigger than the regular shorter Sog fixed blades. I have an old Western Bowie, an Ontario spec plus raider Bowie and a CS Trailmaster all of those have longer blades and smaller MUCH more ergonomic handles. Of those i'd go with the Trailmaster but the Ontario is good as well and less expensive. If i lost all my knives tomorrow i'd just buy a Kabar Becker BK7 or BK9. Seriously you can't go wrong with a Becker.
Agree with you on all points, but curious about whether you're familiar with the Gold Rush Bowie by Bear & Son. It looks just like the Western Bowie, but much cheaper and made with stainless 12c27 steel. I've only used mine in the backyard but it seems to bite as well as the bk9. Of course the bk9 is legendary and deservedly so, while Bear has a below average reputation it seems.

This is true! I'm still very much leaning towards the Fallkniven Thor. Havent seen anything in the same price range that has the same draw to me.
If you can afford it get it before it sells out. These are limited, correct?
Now I feel stupid, like I fell for the marketing as if it were a special, limited edition, just found ou they've been around awhile
