Looking for a good bush knife

Beckers are crap? Since when? I would expect that kind of near-sighted opinion from someone with 10 posts.

For one I never mentioned any names such as your Becker.

Secondly I thought this was an open forum for people to get a vast opinion from the members here.

Third, words like good, great, awesome are relative to a persons experience I mine is different than yours whoever you are.

Fourth, if you guys don't want everyone opinion and only respect the opinion of a few people here then label it under your house rules for everyone to shut up!!

Fifth, I have bought my share of the mall ninja crap to learn that it is crap and have moved on to what I consider finer knives to which I end up owning fewer because I have to save longer for them.

Sixth, no I wouldn't think twice of hammering any of my Bark River, Fallkniven, Esse or Tops blades into any block of wood but I would think more than twice of doing so with your Beckers, gerbers, and whatever else you think is good to do so with because I know they will break from personal experience and reading the review of others.

I came on here to learn and participate... If that is not what this place is for say so and I will gladly leave with no intention to return.

This. Is. Funny.

Why? Because you compare Beckers to Gerbers without even owning one. And yes, we respect people that actually own a knife before they review it more than we respect know-it-all noobs.

Finally, you kind of contradicted yourself when you said that a good knife can't be had for under $200, and then stated that you own/use ESEEs and Tops.

Learning and participating are encouraged. If you want to tell us all that some of the most undisputed hard use knives aren't good enough without even owning one yourself, you might want to think again.

Also, bring some real points to the table, and I will listen. Just shouting, "I don't want any mall-ninja Beckers" and putting "crap" everywhere doesn't get you anywhere on a Forum.

I have no experience with Marttiini, but why stay away from them?

Marttiini is a traditional and sort of famous (at least in Finland) knifemaker, but the word on the street is that they are nowdays more into marketing their knives and developing good looking knives than actually making good knives that are meant to be used. They seem to prefer 'stainless steel' that shines like hell, but hard to find out what stainless steel it exactly is. Me thinks the steel is selected more for its polished looks rather than having good edge qualities. Anyways, thats how the brand is viewed today by many knife fanatics here.

I have C**P Becker BK9 and ESSE 3. If I'm going into tough country, I take a back up knife not because I'm worried that one or the other won't stand up to hard use, but because things get lost. My BK 9 lives beside the wood stove. I pound it through cottonwood splits with a bowling pin if the split is a little too big for the fire box. I have a C**P Buck 119 that I bought in 1971. It has been used hard and put away wet for almost 45 years. You can still buy one for around $50. I have a C**P Condor Nesmuk that hasn't been field tested but it's a stout looker. To dismiss knives under $100 as C**P speaks to a lack of real world experience. As another poster noted, people somehow managed to get through a couple hundred years of back country living with the equivalent of an Old Hickory butcher knife. Yeah, anyone who posts a strong opinion and is offended by push back might not feel welcome here. My experience is that Blade Forums in one of the most friendly and useful forums on the interweb.

Read before you post... I said you can't get a "good" knife in my opinion for under a hundred... not for under two hundred... there are plenty of "good" knives for between one and two hundred... and no I don't own any of the JUNK you just labeled because after having used them I have tossed them...

There is still some knife discussion to be had here, no need for this to be thrown in the trash.

There are alot of good customs to be had for around that price. keep an eye on the exchange.
bk16-17
enzo trapper
tops BOB ive seen them just a tad above 100 if you can swing it.
condor
esee
ontario

ect ect ect.. Good luck . Im sure what ever you choose will serve you well. and if not trade or sell it off and start again :)

If you have your heart set on scandi. enzo gets my vote for the price.

To the OP:

The Scrapyard Mud Mutt is a brand-new slicer that is near your price range. Mine will arrive tomorrow; review will be forthcoming. It is about the closest thing to a scandi that Busse/kin has ever made IMO. (High flat grind, thin steel, etc.)

Trying to find a good 4"-5" scandi grind bush craft style knife under $100. I already own a mora so looking for something different.

Howdy sir,

Look no further then a Ka-Bar Becker BK2 for all your bush needs. Ka-bar's have been described earlier in the thread as "sharpened pry bars" however if you had to base your survival on anything, why not just that? you can do ANYTHING with this knife (including the dis-assembly of lawnmowers, concrete bricks, and I believe a wood stove *I need to find that thread*). The spine may be 1/4' thick but it thins out extreamly nice at the blade.

There has been many different opinions expressed and this one is mine. The great thing about the conditions of your recommendation is if you don't like the knife you can always sell it and get another knife without taking much of a loss (see as it is under $100)
