Looking for a good bush knife

He's obviously trolling... the fact he brings up reviews as proof and then mentions beckers as crap is a complete contradiction... anyone who's read reviews of Becker knives knows they're highly regarded.
Nonetheless, sometimes it's fun to feed the trolls. Sorry OP, there are MANY knives under $100 that make fine bushcraft knives, which you already have the most inexpensive of them(the Mora... a decent, comfortable one for sure). I don't have a lot of experience with scandi ground blades, though I have been looking at them myself recently. I want a traditional styled bushcraft knife... and for that, I certainly wouldn't want a Tops... there's nothing traditional looking about it.

Magicatus, claims to have hundreds of knives, yet doesn't exhibit the real world experience of having them...

Here are a couple "crap" Beckers that can't handle hard use...

And part where he says that Beckers are the same quality as Gerbers is quite honestly proof that he never owned either. It gave me the laugh of the morning!

Very, very cool picture of the 9, by the way. I wish that I had trees on our property that needed removing...;)

Trolling... hahahaha... the guy was asking for bushcraft knives under a hundred... your Beckers all have retail lists of over a hundred for one.

1095 tool steel is not bad for steels made over ten years ago but as a tool steel it is one of the least expensive tool steels because it is very soft and hardly holds an edge compared to 01, W2, and especially A2 tool steel, but its costs allows manufacturers to put out some decent knives at low costs... Esse and Tops have done an excellent job of using 1095, while incorporating quality handle materials such as G-10 as well as micarta which stand up to the elements... this crap Zytel they use for handles on the beckers won't stand up worth a crap in comparison to materials that cost a fraction more.

Then lets get into fit and finish... Becker crap... ruff, sharp edges all over the place... creates many hot spots with extended work... and it is still a knife retailing over a hundred bucks along the same line as Tops Bob also made in 1095 with proper handle materials hat will last a life time, on a knife designed to be a bushcraft knife.

You want to justify your crap to yourself do so... but I'm not going to buy it.

Incorrect sir. Head over to Lebarons. All Becker products are $95 and under.

Like I said before... don't you people know how to read... I said "retail lists over $100.00" or do you need a dictionary to know what retail list price is?

Looooooool. This thread has proven to be way more entertaining than I expected. I'm gonna get the popcorn and watch a 13 year old continue to kick and scream because someone doesn't share his opinion.

1re·tail
verb \ˈrē-ˌtāl, especially for 2 also ri-ˈtāl\

: to sell (something) to customers for their own use

: to be sold to the final customer for a specified price

: to tell (something) to one person after another : to tell (something) again

Apparently you are the one who needs the dictionary...

Should he be able to find one for under a said price then that is what it retails for at said location. I think you are confusing retail with m.s.r.p

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and no one is denying this. But! You're not making it easy for people to take your comments lightly.. And you're rubbing a lot of members up the wrong way with such an objective way of expressing yourself.

I certainly don't agree with you saying a decent knife can't be had for under a hundred bucks, at all! I know from experience and can confidently argue with you all day, but that would be silly.

So my advice is to be more open minded, and really only be so objective if you have direct experience!

For the op have a look at karesuando + EKA and wood jewel .

I must voice my opinion on Marttiini. I have a Marttiin Condor Timberjack in carbon steel and it is just as good if not better than my Mora heavy duty. While I can't speak for their stainless I believe Mora's stainless is superior.

don't feed the trolls...some of us who have spent many many years in the outdoors know what does and doesn't work and I only hope that the op has figured out who's advice is based on real life experience. calling Becker's scales "crap zytel" exposed his lack of knowledge when it comes to these knives.

Magic anus......I have many great knives under the Op's price point. Come to think of it, ALL of my knives are $100. Call me cheap, call me uneducated, but I have made countless fires, processed food, batonned so much wood, and other camp chores with my knives. I have not broken so much as the tip.

Using a more expensive knife only earns style points. When you are out in the woods, style points can be thrown out the window. Show me a knife at $200 that can outlast my Beckers, ESEE's, Kabar, and Benchmade and I will say you got caught overpaying for steel.

As a matter of fact I have a $200 knife (my uncle is a knife maker in PA) that I refuse to use for hard task, only cutting critters because I plan to pass it down to my son an don't want to beat on it. I refuse to buy a $200+ knife because I am a young father of two and don't feel the need to invest that much in another blade. In fact just today I took my two on a hike and started a five by the river to warm there toes with nothing but a ferro rod and piece of crap izula lol. Trust me I understand the quality and pride in owning a custom beautiful knife I just don't see the point in it at this point of my life. I am actually kinda pleased this thread has gone this direction it makes for a entertaining Sunday.

Stop calling it crap. Period. You clearly are an ignorant noob to the knife world. Beckers retail for $20 to $80. Get your facts straight, noobie. The more you post, the more you will look stupid. This went from you saying that you don't think that any knife under $200 is good to you saying that Beckers (the knives that are proven to be hard use fixed blades in the knife community) are "crap." I dare you to baton a telephone pole or chop down a tree with a fresh turd.

That is all.

Everyone has their own budget they have to stick to. If $100 is the budget max, then what better place to ask for opinions on what are good blades for that price range. It's irritating when people make arguments over stupid stuff. If you're into thick and heavy blades, hard to beat the balance, material and price of the Becker models. I purchased the BK2 and didn't really care for it. I wasn't a big fan of the blade coating and the handle shape. I followed many of the ideas on the forum, stripped the coating, convexed the edge, and made my own scales. Totally different feel to the knife and I love it. I've used it fir three years, not one issue. Since then I saved up and had a bladesmith make me a blade to specs I wanted.

I have no place within a three hour drive that sells "bush" style knives. Shape and feel of the ideal knife is very personal. Hard to decide if a knife will feel good and fit my needs by looking at pictures of it. My opinion is its better to buy cheaper blades until you know exactly what you like. Then, if you want, you can purchase a more expensive blade that meets your needs. By the way, you can find many bladesmiths who will make you a blade in the $150 + range.

+1 to these wise guys. Magicatus, you have a lot to learn about how forums work, what "good" knives are, and how to be polite.

I have owned, used, and enjoyed many knives from ESEE and a couple Beckers. I can say with complete confidence that my Swamp Rats can out do them in every catigory. However given the OPs budget of 100 dollars my suggestion would be try to find a used BK16 with the micarta scales on it. For 100 bucks I do not think there is a better woods knife from any maker.

This guy gets it. If you are going to say that "A" knife is better than "B" knife, you need to own them both. PatrickKnight says that the Swamp Rats can out do the Beckers/ESEEs. Notice that he didn't call either knife brand "crap," he actually owns both brands, and he admits that both are valid options.
