OH MY GOD!!!

Where has this guy been all these years?!?!?
All those discussions about lockup, super steels, heat treat, etc..
POINTLESS!!
You morons have been overspending for years. Get rid of those faulty, ready to snap Sirogorovs and ZTs.
They just can't hold a candle to the stupendous superiority, of the ultimate bang for buck emperor known as Smith & Wesson knives.

I myself must be counted amongst you uneducated plebeians.
But not for long!! I have seen the light, and I shall now sell my poorly engineered Thorburn custom and replace it with a reliable washer pivoted Kubay (I obviously need to prove my worthiness before I have the privilege to own a S&W)

Now if you unwashed masses will excuse me, I am going to sign up for some correspondence course classes and become an engineer myself.
I can't wait to learn how to make a choo-choo train go Woo-Woo! when it passes you.

Nothing wrong with what you said. But on this forum, $300 is regarded by many as a mid range price, or maybe just slightly above the mid range.
Ha ha, I won't be here long. I am new to knives, only for self defense and survival. After I find a few more good ones, I have options, I will be spending more time in knife fight for self defense instead of keep looking at knives. Nothing is worst than carrying a weapon and NOT know how to use it. It's NOT exactly that easy to use a knife, try using a rubber knife on a heavy kicking bag and one will see it's NOT as easy.

I looked at a lot of fancy knives, I can't help start laughing. What are they for other than showing off how expensive they are, who design it. A lot of them sure ain't good for self defense. I bet even Cold Steel is too cheap for them. I don't like Cold Steel mainly because they don't have finger flipper tab that can serve as protection against the knife from being shoved into the hand when shanking(thrusting). I want to have quick deploy.

I have nothing against S&W. I actually regret giving away one of the really cheap one($15) to my stepson and I am actually thinking about buying another one for myself. BUT, you have to really check them when you buy one. Look at post #28 in page 2 of this thread. I had detail description of the S&W I bought that has problem:
https://store.smith-wesson.com/tact...13gls-drop-point-folding-knife/SWMP13GLS.html

Remember they all made in China, they are very inconsistent. Those people cut corners and do sloppy work. Open them up and check every one of them if you buy it. Read post #36 on part of the knife that can be the weak point of the knife after I opened it up. Outward looks are very deceiving. The ball bearings can really weaken the integrity of the knife.

I am really surprised when I brought up these kinds of issues, people here don't really seem to know what I am talking about. To me, this is just common sense engineering, looking for potential weak point if you are using it as last defense of your life!!!

I can never understand if it's not for self defense, why people even dream of carrying a knife in daily city life!!!! If you live in the wild, why are you looking at those fancy pen like thin fancy knives?!!! It's is a TOOL!!!!

You keep saying the weak point of the knife. Have you seen a blade break at that point?

As an engineer, you anticipate. The weakest point of a knife is the tip, of cause, then you look at other potential weak area. there are youtube testing on knives like prying and all, but a lot of what they test are without ball bearings that create the weak point. that's the reason the true tactical knives use bronze washer instead of ball bearings. With good engineering, they can make it NOT a weak point even with ball bearings. Just lousy engineering.

I suggest a lot more reading. $15 knives don’t use quality bearings or quality parts.
Hence your issues.

Are you looking for a prybar or a tactical knife? Because the lock failing is much more likely than a blade breaking.

This thread should probably be in prac tac.

For survival in a car accident, you don't have a pry bar!!! You survival knife might be the ONLY tool you have. You don't carry a prybar with you every day!!!

When you thrust the knife, nothing prevent the knife from being shoved back into your hand. there goes your tendons of your fingers. they are expensive though.
I’ve never had to thrust my knife thru a sandwich or an envelope…you know, doing normal knife stuff.

I have kitchen knife for sandwich, I have letter opener for envelope(cheap) and box cutter for cardboard boxes. I don't sharpen my self defense knives to very sharp for cutting sandwich, open letters and all that!!! I sure don't carry a knife for those purpose.

You guys seriously carrying a knife everywhere just for eating and opening mails? A $400 knife for that? Seriously!!! Never mind about fighting, when you really need it in a car accident, can those even cut the seat belt?

A small slip joint will cut a seat belt. Fact
A $50 knife that is designed well can more than do the job. I already showed 3 that I will trust my life with anyone of them. Those are all with ball bearings also, just good design.

Then what makes you think a more expensive knife won’t do the same? Go thru this thread and see what some members do with their knives…

Or, alternatively, maybe you just don't know as much as you think you do. Having an engineering degree does not make you a knife designer, neither does it give you license to make wild claims that a carefully engineered and precision crafted knife made of superior materials is inferior to a $25 gas station knife.
However, if you intend to carry a knife that you figure you are going to stab somebody with, its better to have the police confiscate a $15 piece of junk than a $500 CRK. Its going to be a single use knife, a throwaway, why are you worrying about its design? Its not likely that you will be fighting zombie ninjas at the mall.....

As far as carrying a knife to be used strictly for the purpose of self defense, there are plenty of threads discussing this. Read them before going directly to jail........

I use my knives for everything. Cutting anything that needs to be cut. Butchering birds after a hunt. Opening packages and letters.

I'm also not sure why you think any sharp knife can't cut a seatbelt. It's not made of metal.

And you know more? give some technical comments on what I posted in those analytical posts.

I did not say the expensive knives are inferior, just no better in a lot of cases. Why pay more.
