Looking for the perfect bush/survival knife for me. Going with ESEE most likely.

cool, NY is the safest place in the world i guess, screw preparing for anything cause NY is just so safe from natural disasters its pointless, good advice..... did you know yellowstone is basically a giant active volcanco capable of killing of most of the vegetation in the world, including the forest of upstate NY, but screw it, just like most typical new yorkers, you think youve got the world all figured out already, nobody can tell you guys anything

You really can't go wrong with either of those.
The Dragonfly is only 1/8th thick and cuts like mad. Its perfect with a machete or something heavy.

The handle on the dragonfly looks comfortable.

Carbon steel has plenty good longevity if you ask me.... So if you like a carbon steel knife, don't let fear of corrosion deter you. They don't rust away to nothing overnight. They say a picture's worth 1000 words, so here's 2000 words worth:

Yeah, but that knife is going to corrode if it gets caught in a tsunami of salt water that rolls across from the eastern seaboard into upstate New York. And then that wooden handle will be attacked if a plague of super-sized mutant termite swarms sweep the state eating every bit of wood in their path. Stainless steel with kraton or micarta handles would be soooo much better. You gotta be prepared for every scenario. You can't predict what the future holds or know what mother nature intends for us.

LOL

Ahahahaha!!!! Now THAT was funny! Thanks for the laugh, man.

maybe i am i little outspoken and even abrasive. but im honest and uncompromising, (like any good knife should be), maybe im not the most politically correct poster on this site, maybe my opinions are vastly different from the majority, maybe i dont give a sh-t if i get kicked off a website for being an honest, up front guy, cause a couple crybabies cant handle it. you know what you get with me, which is more than i can say for most

Great....now tone down the abrasiveness. Civility wins the day and if you decide to be a trouble maker the decision on whether you stay or go will be easy to make.

That's nice to know. I have the B.O.B. Fielcdcraft. Good knife, but something thinner for that works better for slicing would be nice. It's been on my list, but I have to wait. I've bought too many knives in the last couple of months--I know. That's blasphemy to say that on BladeForums :)

Which of those knives has the thickest grip? My problem is that I have XXL sized hands and many knives the grip is either too short (not a problem with those), or not a little too thin.

I would say the Bushmaster has the fullest handle. The blade is like .20 thick, plus I had liners added. Its one of those knives that you forget you are holding and becomes an extension of your hand.

The Dragonfly handle is thinner but its tall and a full five inches. I sometimes have a hard time getting into XL gloves and have no problem with the handle on the Dragonfly.

They may be similar in length but their steel and thickness sets them apart. The thicker Bushmaster is more of a one knife solution. I have thumped on the Dragonfly but something tells me not to push it too far. I keep it with a machete for the heavy stuff.

I'm minutes away from pulling the trigger on an esee 4, and I was just curious if anyone has any imput towards the standard drop point v. sharpened clip blade? I like the looks of the clip but didn't know if there were any downsides to it.

Well, for one, in a lot of localities it is illegal. If that doesn't concern you, great. Also, if you want to do any batoning with it, your baton will get eaten up. I consider a double edged knife more of a tactical, defensive type blade. If that is your primary desire then go for it. Otherwise I think the standard version would be better.

continue to be a trouble maker???? cause i ask people to open their minds and consider some possibilities that maybe they hadnt thought of before???? my bad, i didnt realize the website was full of a bunch of geologist who have been monitoring all the fault lines, weather patterns, glacial melting, lava flows etc.. who can guarantee there wont ever be a natural disaster in NY, maybe ill just fall in line and start recommending an esse 4,5, or 6 to anyone who needs a survival knife, food prepper, pencil sharpener, can opener, blender, face shaver, chainsaw, sewing kit, new gear shifter, etc. etc., then ill fit in

Guy, seriously, man. Time to cool it out. Morrow will drop the hammer without hesitation. I've got a few round-circle shaped scars on my own head. Trust me on this.

Oh come on...you know exactly what I'm talking about. Read your posts in this thread if you need a refresher. A couple of examples..."muscle moderator guy" and "idiot" stand out. If you have on topic opinions, please share them. Insulting those who you don't agree only puts you in express exit line. I would have guessed after admitting you are out spoken and abrasive I wouldn't have to explain the intent of my first post....maybe I'm the idiot.

EDIT: Maybe it's just easier to say...share your opinion without being a douche. Easy enough?

alright, im just having fun, but ill take your advice anyway, just cause i like your style

so we can be idiots....but not douches...i believe i understand, my apologies for getting everyone all riled up, i will do my best to behave

getting back on topic, has anyone considered a folder for a bug out bag, it would take up a little less room in the bag, and it sounds like theres some beefy folders like a buck/tops csar t, that could fill the role, any thoughts on this

Well I just pulled the trigger on the 4. It took forever to find a sight that had the right combination of coating color and sheath style, but I decided to check out knifeworks and "ka-ching". To make it even better it was a few dollars less than the other sights. I was really wanting to go with bark river, but my funds are a little tight right now. Another thing that pushed me towards the esee was the warranty. If a company is willing to stand behind their product that much then I am happy to give them my $.
And now we wait...

I always have a Swisschamp in my backpack.
With the saw it'll take down 2" diameter trees, and is great for making tinder of all sizes...plus it has a whole bunch of other handy tools. :)

I've also left a Cold Steel Rajah 2 in there for months at a time; not too pricey, and acts as a handy folding machete (14" overall length, 6" of blade).

Not set up as a bug out bag, just my carry everywhere bag.

Great knfe for the money.
I definitely recommend them.
Heck, my dad's about to turn 68, and he likes one for hikes. :)

For a dedicating chopping blade a fixed blade is better (obviously), but the Rajah 2 has no problem with chopping down the occasional 3" diameter tree.

Thanks. That's helpful. I have the BOB and also a Becker BK-7 for when I needed a heavier blade knife. The Dragonfly might a good choice. I'll keep it on the list :)
