lum folder failing a spine whack test repeatedly

none of my other few remaining spyderco linerlocks fail the "test"... and I would nessecarily call a paperback book a hard surface... if a lock not fuctioning correctly isn't covered by warranty, what good is that warranty?
is the warranty not good on a knife I bought second hand?? (from a member of this forum, in *mint* condition???)

Personally I would call the spine of a paper back book a "hard" surface. Try to flex bend and compress that area by hand and tell me how well that goes...

Also, You have already stated you KNOW the policy on discontinued knives. If they have parts they will fix it. If they don't have parts they CANT fix it. What should they do One off you a new knife? maybe spruce it up ya know Titanium handles frame lock ZDP-189 blade. Yeah thats about right..... :jerkit:

And for those asking what kuribo's comment about the Strider has to do with this, he is just pointing out that Buck's CS is better than Spyderco's. And he appears to be right.

Are you saying that Buck will repair knives that they no longer make, and no longer have parts for? Because that is only way that what was posted would mean that Buck has better customer service than Spyderco.

Edit: That post didn't say that the knife was a Buck. It could just as well have been a Strider, and they haven't discontinued any of their folders as far as I know.

Did Spyderco ask the op to send in the knife to see if it actually NEEDED new parts? Maybe an adjustment or two would have been enough. Sounds like they just gave him the brush off....They could have said send it in, then told him it was unrepairable after actually checking it out....

Spyderco has an excellent reputation and when they don't go the extra mile, people who expect it are unhappy...

tummler, it is my opinion that Spyderco doesn't owe you the fixing or replcing of that knife. Maybe the person that sold it to you does, but that's about it.

I think Spyderco canceling the warranty just because you are the second owner is nothing but BS. Should they cancel the warranty if more than two different people have held the knife.

Kuribo- As far as I know Striders family of folders has parts commonality in the SNG,SMF,PT and AR/GB series. Meaning that yesterdays SNG can be repaired by todays parts with few if any modifications. Your point is therefore null and void. The Lum has been discontinued for 6 or 7 years and parts overruns are long gone.

AGAIN, for those of you joining our program late- DO YOU ASK CHEVROLET FOR PARTS TO FIX A '62 IMPALA, OR REMINGTON TO FIX A LONG DISCONTINUED SHOTGUN?? Come on people, this is not rocket science for heavens sake. You either retire the tool or hire someone who specializes to fix it. OR, not buy it to begin with. OR, return it if it is not as advertised.

This was a production collaboration with a custom knifemaker that had limited production numbers. Do the math. Not alot of spares around or parts and Sal is not clairvoint, ergo he did not forsee one guy 8 years later needing a liner for it so he should have made that one extra just for him.

I beats me how some people passed business and math classes.

I think you didn't read what's going on. Spyderco didn't cancel their warranty. Their warranty is not for a free fix or replacement for any knife any time if eventually wears out.

Read the quoted warranty in this thread.

Strider said "Send it in and we will see what we can do"

Spyderco said "It's old we can't help you"

See the difference? That's my point, not that Strider actually fixed it....

So in other words, it's not a "lifetime warranty". And about the '62 Impala and reminigton, neither one of those companies offer a "lifetime warrenty". If they did, then yes, I would expect them to fix it.

I can rebuild it no problem but if you whack it this same way hard repeatedly even if I make it a massively thick frame lock I can't stand behind the warranty to cover what happens in the contact for the lock up anymore than Spyderco my friend. This will indent the lock on even the best made ones regardless of what anyone tells you.

In my experience this type of whacking the spine is especially hard on a thin liner lock.

Kuribo & redsst- the spyderco warranty is posted prominently on their website under the
Edge-u-cation tab. Nowhere does it say "lifetime". And kuribo, I am sure if the SNG had been disco'd for 7 years and you called you would get the same answer tummler was given.

So there you have it. There is no better way to sum up this whole thread other than that. Spyderco does not offer a lifetime warranty.
Tummler, guess you have exceeded the maximum length of time that Spyderco will stand behind their products.
You should have bought a Buck. :) j/k

Other than that, nothing I suppose....

You finally got this part right. Strider has nothing to do with spyderco. It's an irrelevancy. I'm not going to get into a spyderco vs. strider debate. There's already enough stupidity around here.

So, once again, we're talking about spydercos, not striders, busses, bucks, kershaws, etc. Joe

thats just freaking stupid... I would be willing to bet money that if it was a old D3 or something they would have no problem doing something for him the Problem is it was a limited production piece LONG ago.....:jerkit:

yeah, if anyone is to blame, its the guy who tricked you into paying 200 bux for a defective knife.

you may as well send it to that str guy so he can fix it up for you so your 200 bux wont be a complete waste.

the answer I was given is exactly what I would expect from a company that DOESN'T stand behind their product
