Lum Tanto

Nice! This is one of those knives that I have no need for, wouldn't know what to do with it, but even so just want it! Lol. Every now and then knives like this come along for me. A reissue would be nice!

Is that Ti a PE or a CE?

PLain edge (PE was too short of a reply)

I also had a black blade, black handle one at one point but traded it for the grey sprint run model.

That's a beautiful one with the titanium scales! I had no idea they had more versions; now the hunt is on! :)

I've owned a C-46 black blade, CE Lum Tanto folder for a long time now. It's one of my user arsenal and I do carry it on occasions. When I do carry it and show it to friends I get a ton of compliments on it. And keep in mind the one I have is one of the older ATS-55 versions.

I never really liked Tanto blades until I got my first Spyderco Lum Tanto folder. Bob Lum's tanto design is truly different and more streamlined than most any other tanto design I've ever encountered. I actually find the Lum Tanto really "user friendly". The spine on that blade is really thick and it gives me a lot of confidence carrying it.

The Lum Tanto is truly a timeless classic and one of Spyderco's top 5 collaborations of all time IMO.

I'm really a newbie regarding Spyderco, since 2012, so there is a lot I don't know; thanks for the post; I had no idea they used ATS-55 so thank you much.

Exceptional knife! I regret having mine pimped…. ended up selling it. :( Definitely would like to pick up another sometime.

OH yes indeed the very first run of the C-46 Lum Tanto folder was done with ATS-55>> but it was shortly after that first run they were made with VG-10 and to the best of my knowledge have been exclusive made with VG-10 since ( including the Sprint Runs). Personally I always kind of liked ATS-55 myself which is why I'm content with the one I got. I'm starting to believe that the ATS-55 models might be
gaining some collector status>> at least the ones NIB. Because it's not very often I see a C-46 Lum tanto folder in that steel up for sale or trade anymore. The ATS-55 Era was an interesting one in Spyderco history. There were some very interesting blade designs that came from that era. The Stainless Rescue model, the original Herbst model, The G-10 Harpy and a few others I could mention came forth during that relatively short era.

The Lum Tanto truly has to go down in the top 5 of all time as far as blades in a beauty contest. It's truly one of my favorites to gaze at ;)

Thanks for the history info JD, I agree with you, top 5 of all time of all brands, I think; I really like this knife, and love all of Bob Lum's designs; I've got an "Encounter" stashed away, one of 1,000, I don't think I will ever use it, the same for this Tanto.

Well I hope you change your mind>> sure keep the one you got that is NIB but don't give up on finding a "user">> they are out there if you keep your eyes open. I actually like using mine on occasion. I don't use mine all the time because I do fear losing it. I've lost 4 of my Spyders in the past year and I now believe at least 3 of them were stolen.

But the LUM Tanto folder is one I really keep a close eye on. Actually if I were to find a used Lum Tanto with the titanium handle I would probably retire the one I use now. I really liked the grip factor of the titanium Lum Tanto folder.

There is one thing to be mindful of however>> the end of the blade has the Hamaguri ( appleseed" grind) and it has a convex edge on the end of the blade. It is a bit tricky to sharpen but not rocket science by any means. The spine is so thick on the Lum tanto folder that I have no fear what so ever of it breaking or chipping. So if you ever get the chance to score a "user" of this great model I highly suggest you jump on it.

Hey "Makariotes" being you like the C-46 Lum Tanto Folder so much I think you owe it to yourself to check out one of the Sprint version of the fixed blade LUM TANTO. The very first run was done in AUS-8 which I wasn't terribly crazy about in that blade steel for plain edges ( although I do like it in Spyderedge). But the Sprint version has VG-10 which I've always found to be a very dependable hard use steel.

The handle on the fixed blade LUM is just awesome and most of them come with a gorgeous sheath as well. You might just want to test drive one of those while you're at it. ;)
