And wait a minute... do you mean ACTUAL sandpaper... again not dedicated sharpening stuff????
 
Yup, normal sandpaper. I use wet/dry automotive paper and wash it off when it starts to not cut as well.
 
I prefer to keep the sandpaper wet, and your backing cant be too hard, but it can be too soft. Too soft and your edges will end up more obtuse with the same pressure.

I've used wet paper on polished granite and it works fine. You just have to manually rotate the edge angle on each pass
