M390 810-1401 Contego

Well it showed up today......... And I love it! What a chunk of steel. This thing is a tank and makes my 710 feel a lot smaller. The only thing that I don't like 100% is the mostly blue color. Was hoping to get a mostly black sample, but I can definitely live with it. I can't wait to start using this thing, and it just so happens that I'm heading to the lake tomorrow. Fit and finish is great: just a tiny, tiny tick of up and down "play" along with no side to side play and the centering is just barely off to the right. It also came very sharp. Very satisfied with this knife!!
If you want to switch, email me.

The backspacer to which the glass breaker is attached on the regular Contego 910 is prone to rust, cracking and breaking. Several threads on this issue and here's one: 810 Contego backspacer fracture. Benchmade will send you a new backspacer for the asking.

I may be a little off topic, but if I sent in my 810 Contego to Benchmade, and asked them to swap the CPM-M4 blade for the M390 blade would they do it? I know you can have blades replaced for a nominal fee, but would they et me have the upgrade you think?

Nope.

There is a newer black backspacer with the glass breaker that BM uses on knives sent in for warranty work. A picture was posted on another thread.

After one month of owning and using my 810-1401 everything is still sharp, straight and tight. Ive even used this thing to dig mud out of a drainage pipe and due to the big blade worked exceedingly well. I of course rinsed all the mud out of the lock etc and hit it with Tuff Glide. Just to add....damn! My 810-1401 was jam packed with mud and rock and the axis lock still worked! It cuts rope like a laser too. Only damage after one month of pretty heavy use is one small light scratch on the blade!

+1 here. I think that shows resilience of M390. M4 version is no slouch, but it needs to be well maintained especially when M4 is exposed without protective coating.

Does anyone know when the latest shipment is coming in from BM? I ordered mine on 5/27. Waiting eagerly for my first bench made!

First post btw haha. new to blade forums.

Finally got ahold of one of these used. WOW! OK, the standard Contego is a helluva knife, but IMO this is Benchmade's best G10 work to date and some of the nicest I've ever seen on ANY knife. The blue they chose is beautiful, dark enough not to dirty fast yet light enough that the contrast is more visual than on something like the G10 Blue-Black Hinder scales (also cool ass G10 usage), the G10 machining is super consistent and accurate, the color alternating is super consistent...teh awesome! The $200 price tag isn't cheap, but this knife is a great value given it really uses the finest materials on the market today! Amazing steel, fantastic design, excellent fit and finish, and a really unusual but awesome usage of G10.

I hope we start seeing this two-tone work on more of their knives. A 710 with two-tone G10 in M390 or M4 would be badass.

When Benchmade does knives like this, I feel they really differentiate themselves from the crowd.

Awesome pictures! I don't think I can get anything like that with my Nikon Coolpix P510. What settings did you use? Lighting? Mirror for the base, but what kind of booth and background?

Thank you ! The camera equipment is this:

But the simple "light tent" has been replaced recently by this so called "Mini Photostudio":

I figured out a while ago that the right light is key, making good pictures. So I bought this "Mini Photostudio". Everything is included and the case acts as the base and back of the studio but also for storage and transportation. Sweet idea from the manufacturer, isnt't it ?

After being out of the country for the past 4 months I finally got to see my new Contego I bought back in March. I am a little disappointed. Mine came off centered and after all my efforts it won't center. I am sending it in to Benchmade. This will be my first time ever I had to send a knife back to any company. I also don't like having to pay for the shipping. On a brighter note the two Spyderco Manix2 S10v's and the one ZT 350 M390 I also bought while overseas came perfect.
