M390 810-1401 Contego

That is certainly an attractive knife. I guess the problem with the plastic backspacer cracking will no longer be an issue with the stainless steel backspacer. I don't have a contego yet so this may need to be added to the stables, but at a fairly large price hike compared to the current version will be a hard choice. Thankfully BladeHQ is down the freeway..... although that's not something to be thankful for at times. :-(

I had talked with Roger before the Forum Knife about a LE Rift in M390, and he wasn't sure Benchmade would go for it. Maybe now they'll consider it!

I will sell my M4 Contego to get this one. I prefer satin finish blades, and the "stainless M4" is perfect for me. Of course, if someone comes out with a M390 Rift, I'll be in a quandary, as the Rift is almost the perfect knife for me until Benchmade makes a Axis lock mini-AFCK.

I have been eyeing the Contego for a while now, and now that its avail in m390 I'm super excited! Income tax return couldn't be spent in a better way :)

That would be a MUST have.

As an aside it's nice to see the market for larger sized blades is still very much alive and well.

As a personal preference (3.75" - 4" blades ) I really appreciate these offering's from BM!

Big thumbs up for the new and improved Contego! Although I really like the CPM-M4 steel / version M390 is another great steel. Plus, esthetically I love the color scheme of the scales. Can't wait to see the full line up or other versions suggested in the description.

I think that part does not mean there are other versions, just a bit of variation in color like you see in the two knives in Keyman's picture. That's how the AFCKs were also

The backspacer isn't plastic. It's metal. Not trying to make excuses for them but I think in all fairness the intent was for it to be used in emergencies, not as a dedicated glass breaking tool. In that role it just wasn't up to or beefy enough to be used for repeated glass breaking.

I'm also glad they dropped that feature from the design.

I think your right, but thats also what I meant. variations in the color. And when I mean see I should have said the "real" thing when it's finally out. The pic's look like computer gererated ones like they do for knives yet to be released and can look a bit different when they come out, But I understand your point.

We'll see. I'm very excited about this new release!

A little smaller and finer, but no less jimping would be an improvement for my preferences. No problem modifying with some file work and sandpaper.I like the new scales and steel and don't expect much discounts on LE versions. We will see how the discounts pan out going forward(2014) at KW.

One one hand, M390 is easier to use, because it doesn't require coating. I owned a first gen 810 that was too sharp on the scales and which when cutting Brussel sprouts in the kitchen marked the blade. I've never liked coating of any kind, but understand the need on 1095, M2, and M4 high-carbon steel blades. The CeraKote used as the protectant is too fragile. So the 810 sat in the drawer and was sold a short time later. I hate looking at a knife.

This model in M390, while I may pass, is very welcome and I think the knife looks great!

"Its a unlimited exclusive run for 2014."

Does that mean it will be available for all of 2014?

If so then no rush to get this one.

That's how their 710 exclusives (M390, CPM M4) were. When they ran out they reordered, lasted the whole year basically

Thinking back on the other unlimited runs (710-2 and -3) the time they are available will vary but you can assume it will be available at least through the summer. The amount of time will depend on supply of the materials as well.
