M390 810-1401 Contego

There is definitely blue in the scales but to me it is too far off the description of "blue/black" which to me means "blue over black" and the photo used in the advertising of the knife. I do not blame KW, they are a great outfit and I have been buying from them for years and will continue to do so. I can only assume that the picture and description is from Benchmade. I will probably ask KW if I can send it back for one that looks like their site picture.The knife is great in every other way, it is just the color is off IMO. Maybe I am too picky but I really wanted one that looked like the picture and fit the description.

EDIT: Being the great business that KW is they were happy for me to return it in exchange. It is good to deal with quality merchants.

Yeah, I feel your pain. It doesn't look terrible, but the blue looks much better. The black one looks too similar to the standard Contego. I'm getting mine today. Wish me luck.
 
Now I'm getting nervous :grumpy:. The difference in color between those two handles is just amazing - way too much. Yes, Benchmade and KW did say there would be some variation, but those two handles have extreme variation. Mine is supposed to arrive Saturday, I'll post what it looks like when it arrives.

P.S. Looks like there could be a lot of swapping handles between BF members - some may like more blue and some may desire more black. It would be a hassle, but it might work out with a little extra effort. ;)

Man, if I could I would definitely get one. The 810 is the most "makes sense" benchmade right now in my eyes and the upgraded steel at what is now only a slightly upgraded price is awesome. Oh well, next time!
 
Mine is black on the top layer, which I hoped for! Other than being a little right of center (which adjusted out perfectly and is now drying with a drop of blue loc-tite) I wish the top layer of the G10 wasn't quite so smooth. Very happy overall and will probably grab a second. Thanks Knife Works and Benchmade!
 
Gaaaah! Mine went to my old address (we moved 3 months ago) and now I've got to wait another day for it to forward it's way to me.

Just updated my profile on KW to prevent this from happening in the future. It's been long enough that I thought I had gotten all of the addresses updated on the various websites I'm a member of.
 
I'd be lying if I said I didn't want one, but I will have to wait a while.

In fairness, the KW site says that some will be more blue and some will be more black. It's nice that they're exchanging it for you, though. If it were me, I think I'd prefer the black with blue accents rather than the big billboard of bright blue - total taster's choice there. :thumbup:

To me they both look great. I would be happy with either one.

Totally agree with what you said abouy KW, i was hoping for blue, but mine is mostly black :( but I have bigger things to worry about.

Yes, you're right. Usually such things don't bother me too much. The difference to me was much more than I envisioned. I have 2 of the black M4 810's so I really wanted the M390 to resemble the picture shown to promote the knife. To me it is not like a fast food picture where you know the burger will never look that way. It is a high quality product coming from a known maker of quality goods and services. It is like getting a two tone paint job with the colors opposite of what you paid for and wanted. It will all be good. As mentioned KW is a class act and will take care of it.
 
Well, I got mine in and it's very blue. Very happy about that. The blade grind is very good and its hair shaving sharp. However the blade is a good bit off center. Very close to rubbing the liner on the right hand side when looking down on it closed. How hard is it to adjust that?

If it is too far right a slight loosening of the pivot should move it left. Make it an extremely small adjustment and it shouldn't effect lock up at all. Mine was the same way.

Nah, it's impossible to adjust and very dangerous - you should send it to me. Just kidding, congrats, that shouldn't be a big deal to adjust out.
 
Got mine just now. It's the opposite of MCM's pictures, that is, all black down the middle which definitely makes it less attractive or let's just say bland. Also, blade is off center. Other than that the fit & finish is very good. I think I'll exchange mine for blue down the middle.

On a side note, I think they should've just had one set color or two separate models.
 
The blade on mine will not center! Just now I checked another brand new Contego that I got a month ago before the prices went up and it's perfect. If it wasn't for the blade centering I may have kept this M390 model but as is I'll send it back to KW and request one with blue down the middle of the handles and the blade centered. The off-centering is only at the tip and to the right. Any amount of loosening of the pivot screw creates noticeable side to side blade play! Very annoying!
