I finished profiling it out tonight and beveled one of the sides tonight. I bet I took off 1/2 a pound just beveling one side!

Here's my post in the other machete thread.

and here's the 2 pics of the beveled side, hollow ground on a 24" wheel, so there VERY shallow :D

Jason
( Yea Yea I know I need to sweep my shop...)

That looks great Jason. I really like the Recurve in the blade!

The only handle material I have long enough to fit this handle is some "Urban Camo" Micarta so I am going with that, I know this will not cater to the taste of some people but that is what I have and I like it! :p...

I have not HT'd the blade yet (Guess I am holding off due to nerves) And I just realized that I don't have an etcher or a Logo for that matter... Does that disqualify me?:o

I have also started on the Sheath and have it mostly finished!

At the start of this thread I said something about the machete being able to flex like most machete. To me thats a machete. Anything else is a chopper. Not sure if that makes since. Just my thoughs

Didn't realize there was a progress thread... sorry.

Here is the Marchete at different stages of completion...

Concept drawings..

Handle wood and size reference..

After clean up, heat treat and rough handle fitting...

Just about done... It still needs a final sharpening and perhaps a design on the butt of the handle..

The Marchete
5160
18" cutting edge
9" handle
28" overall
5/32" thick at ricasso tapering to 1/8" at tip and butt of tang.
Handle is hickory with hemp wrap, soaked in epoxy.

Sheath still to come.....

i was thinking the same thing. if were going free style choppers, i need to redesign my current project idea.

Rick

Rick, you may want to rename this. I believe you have thrown down the Gauntlet.

I don't consider all machetes to be as thin as Tramontinas (though that is the norm).... I have seen many different thicknesses.

Quoted from the official Custom Machete Challange thread.

In inspiration of Brian Andrew and Pitdog's camp knife Idea, WS&S will be having a custom machete/golok/parang/barong/ you name it contest for any maker who is interested.

Machete specs: 12" to 28" long blade, capable of what the maker thinks a machete is used for.

I wasn't going to enter until they opened it up to parangs and bolos. The spine on my blade tapers from 5/32" to 1/8" and is full flat to .030" before the micro-convex.... it will flex like any 1/8" stock piece.

Are you referring to the thickness of my Blade? cause if you are it is actually .16" not .25 now that the blade is profiled down and is 12" long... My understanding is like Rick stated it was open to the makers interpretation which means you shouldn't have to change your design atakach.

Rick that is amazing but I think we all knew it would be!

here's is one that may possibly be my entry

it's 1/8'' 1095, and paper micarta scales. im just showing a sneak peak :p

the hammon could have been much more defined, but i didnt take the finish past 400 grit, as i figure this is more on performance than finish.

I was just wondering where we were with this project.:thumbup:

I'm kind of shocked that I hadn't noticed this one.
WOW, great looking blade.

Mine is done.

I used the Matulis, a Plilippine bolo that is pointed, for the model of my entry.

14 1/2 in (21 1/4 OAL) 5/32 in thick of 1095. Bocote scales with brass hardware and a lanyard hole. The blade is convex ground with a snakeskin etch. The spine has been "rolled" for comfort with a 2 in "sharp" spot in front of the scales for striking a steel. This is thicker than I usually work, so the piece is a bit heavier than "normal for me".

The handle is sculpted for a swell at the grip.

What's next?????
