Stock sheath with some paracord, nothing special. Turn it around, aaaand...

BAM!

I made this out of a piece of kydex that I had left over from my BK14 sheath, just heat one half of a strip of kydex up, fold it over something that is the width and thickness of your belt, clamp down or hold down with your fingers, sand, drill holes, attach with 2 chicago screws. I didn't have any that would fit, so I just took two from the BK2 sheath. It's all still plenty strong.

My first blade modification ever, I did some jimping and a big firesteel notch in front of it. Inspired by bushman5's mighty LandShark. I marked out the distances I wanted on a piece of adhesive backed paper, stuck it onto the blade, and then started with a cutoff wheel on a dremel. Once I had the tiny notches set up, I started filing away with a tiny round jeweler's file. For the firesteel notch, I started the same way and then took some little grinding stones and sanding drums to it. The edges are very sharp, and the arced shape makes it contact the firesteel more. Throws some great sparks.

The jimping is kinda experimental, I don't know if it's right or too grippy or to slippery. Time will tell. I can always get a bigger or different file and remove some metal.

This one shows how streamlined this carry option is. Rides very close to the body, I love it.

Here's one thing that I'm thinking about, I would like to have a notch there to lift the "billy can" part of my german mess kit (which is good for cooking for 2-3 people), but I'm afraid that this notch would weaken the tip too much. I think I'd angle it straight down instead of sort of leaning towards the tip. The notch would be about 5mm (.197") wide and deep, with a rounded end at the bottom. Bushman5 did a wider, deeper notch further towards the tip, and his looks just fine. What do you guys think about the mods that I've done and about the lifter notch? I really need some feedback.

Thanks for reading!

edit: I have a Maxped Strobe pouch coming, pretty much the perfect size to put some goodies like sharpener, firesteel, tinder, SAK and other stuff on the sheath, so there will be more!

That looks awesome meat. Really nice work brother.

To be honest, it is actually inspired by your jimping. What bushman5 did was too extreme for my little townsie fingers, so I went widerstand on my BK2 :D

Looks good. I especially like the belt loop. The strobe pouch #1433 really is a perfect size, I like mine.

I'd make the pot lifter as shallow as possible while still functional. And for the angle, I think it gives the shark look. Straight might be stronger, but angled may be more stylish.

Thanks!

Also why not just use the firesteel notch to grab your pot with?

Nice job meat! I did the same sheath mod but used nylon webbing. I think yours looks much nicer than mine though.

I love it!!! That is gonna be one bad butt (we cant use bad words ;)) mother!! I've been thinking about doing the same kinds of things to mine also. Keep those pix comin bother!

I'm a fan of the Landshark too. Could you post a pic of the files and tools u're using?

Thanks!

It's too far back. The point of the lifter notch, for me at least, is to get some distance from the hot pot and the even hotter fire. The lifter notch should also be very narrow, not much wider than the pot handle, and deep enough that the handle can't just slip out.

That look great!
What kind of drill did you use for the belt loop?

I used a TiN coated HSS drillbit, in 5mm. Any wood or metal drillbit of the appropriate size will work, as long as it's sharp :)

You plan on polishing the blade or giving it a patina?

I'm thinking about sanding up to 1000grit. More would be too much work, if I polish it I'll do it for rust protection, not for looks. I'll probably put a patina on it at some point, but as long as it's still a work in progress there's no pint in making it pretty.

Funny, I was gonna say "Oh, it's just a file and 2 or 3 other things" but then I realized that I've used a lot of tools.

The belt loop was done with a heatgun, a cordless drill, said drillbit, a piece of aluminum the width and thickness of my belt, and an old flat file. You could probably use a belt sander if you wanted to, but I don't have that kind of power tools at home. The kydex was cut with a good ruler with rubber feet (doesn't slide around) and an exacto knife.

I'll try to take a picture of all the files and grinding stone bits for the dremel I used for the jimping. I could have done it all with a few files, but the dremel was there :) They're at the shop, and it might be some time until I get back there.

Thank you all for your responses!

Lookin' good man. Like the fix on the sheath belt loop too. Gonna' try that on mine. Thanks.

I wonder how much a pot lifter would even effect the strength of something 1/4" thick? Also I guess you could put a pot lifter in the pommel but then you would need to hold the knife by the blade or take the sheath off your belt which would be pain.

Or just use a very thin piece of metal with the notch cut in it, the bend the end so it does not slip inside & stick it in the sheath next to the blade ? Just a thought.

Looking good, man.

I'd put just enough notch to be functional as a billy can lifter, and it surely won't weaken it too much. Remember how much force it took to break the BK3 on the car door.

I never saw that video, youtube won't let me watch it. What a shame. I guess if it works for bushman5, it'll work for me :)

how are those firesteel notches, in terms of effectiveness? A buddy of mine had one put into his knife. His looked more similarly to a dull, vertical guthook. It threw sparks well enough, but not better than a false edge on a smaller knife.
