Maethor's BK-2... Updated with beauty shots on pg 4!

Did you completely finish off the upper portion of the scales, you know top surface right at the ricasso?

Are you gonna peen over the pins?

Yes, they are sanded to 120 grit there, I will only do minor finishing work there.

The pins will not be peened over, they are filed flat and will be sanded down with the rest of the handle.

Thank you all for your kind words, I hope this helps!

I'm not gonna lie, those scales look uncomfortable as all hell ;) Good luck with the job!

Coming along nicely. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Also good luck with the job interview.

Very nice, looks like you have a lot of wood that can be removed on the scales to get them just right. Break a leg tomorrow!

I had been drinking when I originally posted that, apologies if i came across curt. I've made a bunch of mistakes doing all the re handles and making scales. One thing I learned first hand on my very first re handle was that you gotta, gotta completely finish them off on the upper surface before you epoxy them down or you'll mar up the finish on the blade trying to do it afterwards. maybe not a huge deal on this one. Also the epoxy isn't gonna give much shear strength and having the pins peened over will help keep them on if you decide to pound on the thing. Most knife makers use the epoxy to 1) seal up the metal so it doesn't rust under the wood and 2) hold the wood in place while drilling all the holes & trimming the pins.

I will say there are a couple of epoxies which do give real shear strength and long term performance, the only one I can think of is ACRAglass from Brownells.

Oh, no problem FAL'er. I did finish them off there, I'm gonna put another finish on the blade anyways, so it's not too bad if I scartch the ricasso up a bit while finishing. I will definitely pound on the thing, but now that you say that I'm a little bit worried :( Well I'm gonna put the stock scales in my backpack in case the wooden scales fall off or something. I'm a little short on money at the moment, and I didn't want to spend 7.50 plus shipping on the real deal (corby bolts). Maybe I should have.

Well, I hope to finish everything off today and take it to the woods tomorrow.

Got the handle more or less finished. I used a rasp, a file and sandpaper (grits 80, 100 and 120) to shape and finish the handle.

The palm swell could be a little too much, I'll take it for a spin tomorrow or saturday, we'll see after that.

It even still fits the sheath I made for it, retention is okay but not great. Might have to remold the sheath at some point.

I oiled the handle with olive oil, might put a few coats of "real" wood oil or even furniture wax on it later. Sorry, no pics of the oiled wood, I'll get some beauty shots for you guys tomorrow, in the sunlight and all that good stuff.

Thanks for looking!

I like those scales - looks good to me. I would probably sand them a little finer - maybe to 600 or so, and then give them some very light coats of boiled linseed oil.

It's birch :D

Anyways, a coat of light furniture oil is currently drying, and I will put some furniture wax on afterwards. We'll see how it turns out, I hope I finish it up before the sun goes down.

Well, as I said, I might have to take a bit of the palm swell off. Dunno if I'll make it to the woods today, maybe I'll go for an overnighter tomorrow.

Some beauty shots of the oiled and finished handle...

My favorite picture of it. Love it.

That's it, next step will be some kind of patina, I'll try growlingbear's alu/brass blackener if I can find something like that. Cold bluing might be an idea too.

Thanks for watching!

Looks nice meat. How did you like the finished scales? You said earlier you thought the palm swells may be a bit too much.
