Makers who focus on better blade performance?

Jose,
Please send them all to me for some furthur research and testing... :D
David

The original question that started this thread is a fair question. There's no "complete list" of makers who constantly strive for better blade performance. But, you've received some good leads here. As Tom Mayo said, you need to get out on your own, do you research and form your own educated opinions. As Daniel Winkler stated, cutting competitions and public demos are the best place to start, if you want all the B.S. removed from the equation. My experience has been that you'll find a significant number of makers who put out blades that you feel you have great confidence in and that you'll then gravitate towards the styles you like within this group. Some of these folks make knives that cover the entire spectrum from "primitive" for lack of a better word, to ornate and use the same metalurgical priciples throughout. The fancy or "art" part is up to you and your wallet, but it's still a cuttin' machine.

Thanks Jose - that's a whole lot of cutting potential in juist a few pics. Enjoy!

Just say "me", if you're one of those makers.
David

"Me." :o I'm only a hobby maker, and don't forge or do my own heat treating. But I am very interested in the performance of my large blades and have been refining the design over several years of hard use. I still want my knives to be pleasing to the eye, but if I can do so without compromising my functional goals, then its a win-win situation. I'm betting many makers would agree with that perspective.

Pete,
You wrote my favorite writeup on Ed's knives I've ever read.. about the bowie that you bought and used, and your wife didn't understand why you liked it so much. Then you tried to sharpen it using a factory sharpener but ruined the convex edge, then traded the knife because you felt so bad about what you had done..
Do you still wish you kept that knife?
David

I really wish I still had that knife. That's my greatest regret ever with regards to my knives.

Pete

Pete,
..don't give up, you should find another one! Did you ever take a picture of that knife?.. or know where it went? A story that good deserves a happy ending.
David

Sometimes timing means everything. Ed Fowler bowies are so expensive now that I couldn't justify using one. I wouldn't be able to realize the true beauty of the knife. They ARE truly great knives and Ed's a great guy.

Pete

I DO know where the picture is, though. It's pictured in Ed's book, "Knife Talk" on the bowie page, 4th knife down, I think.
